COLORADO SPRINGS METRO LEAGUE

Coronado

Coach: Patrick Dosch, fourth season

Last season: 11-4

Key players: Jared Gorthy, sr.; Joey Callen, sr.; David Ruder, sr.

Outlook: The return of all the starting defenders bodes well, but they will need to find scoring by committee.

Doherty

Coach: Andrew Drummond, 13th season

Last season: 6-8

Key players: Junior Delgado, sr., F; Tristan Wheeler, sr., D; Jesus Gonzalez, sr., GK; Jacob Bevans, sr., D; Blake Imgrund, sr., M; Jack Mann, jr., M.

Outlook: With good upperclassmen back in key positions, the Spartans look ready for a strong season. Delgado is poised for a strong final campaign and could lead Doherty to the state playoffs.

Fountain-Fort Carson

Coach: Jake Heath, first season

Last season: 1-13-1

Key players: Chris Jones, sr., M; Collin Meints, sr. M; Noah Gregory, sr., GK; Errol Coleman, sr., F; Tristan Owens, sr., D.

Outlook: A senior-laden group has worked hard this offseason to rebound from last fall's campaign.

Liberty

Coach: Chaz Woodson, first season

Last season: 5-10

Key players: Eric Bulow, sr., D; Cristian Frausto, sr., M/D; Dawson Calloway, jr. M; Brennen Bengford, jr., D; Brandon Shaughnessy, jr. M/F; Luke Price, jr., GK.

Outlook: With 14 lost to graduation, a new coaching staff and plenty of roles to fill, there are far more questions than answers for the Lancers as they seek a return to the state playoffs.

Palmer

Coach: Tony Gonzalez-Padron, first season

Last season: 5-10

Key players: Misael Pelayo, sr., GK.

Outlook: The Terrors will look to build a new foundation for the program.

Pine Creek

Coach: Ben Corley

Last season: 8-5-3 (state playoffs)

Key players: Andrew Turk, sr. F; Jakob Ervin, sr., M; Colin Welge, sr., GK; Mitch Cutts, sr., M/F; Evan Sturdivant, jr., D/M; Gerardo Alvarez, sr., F.

Outlook: Offense should not be a problem for the Eagles, who return all-stater Turk and added Alvarez, a Mexican exchange student up front. How the defense, which was hit hard by graduation, and the back line gel will be key to Pine Creek's bid for the league title and a playoffs berth.

Rampart

Coach: Karl Anderson, fourth season

Last season: 14-2-1 (state playoffs)

Key players: Paul Deist, sr., M; Jack McReynolds, jr., M; Taylor Ausec, sr., M; Matt Davis, jr. M; Afeworki Zeru, jr. M.

Outlook: The midfielders and forwards have played together for three seasons, but how quickly the all-new back line and goalkeeper come together is key.

Class 4A

COLORADO SPRINGS METRO LEAGUE

Cañon City

Coach: Pat Callahan, 30th season

Last season: 8-6-1

Key players: Logan Hopkins, sr., D; Tanner Hunt, sr., M; Garrett Walworth, jr. F.

Outlook: With six starters to replace, the Tigers will gel quickly.

The Classical Academy

Coach: Blake Galvin, 12th season

Last season: 18-2 (state runner-up)

Key players: Titus Grant, sr., F; Jaden Borja, sr., F; Chris Chasteen, sr. D; Jonny Stephens, jr., D; Garrett Troupe, jr. D.

Outlook: An experienced group is led by a senior class - league Player of the Year, all-state first-teamer Grant; all-league Borja and all-league Chasteen - that has reached three state finals in a row but has yet to break through for that title. The Titans are focused on getting back and doing one better this fall.

Harrison

Coach: Christopher Mason, third season

Last season: 11-5 (state playoffs)

Key players: Carlos Camerena, sr.; Omar Gavino, sr; Coco Delgado.

Outlook: The Panthers are eyeing another state playoffs berth. The depth of the program continues to improve with the addition of a C team this fall.

Mitchell

Coach: Brett Humphrey, ninth season

Last season: 6-9-1 (state playoffs)

Key players: Luis Flores, sr.; Eddie Arciniega, jr.; Sergio Ramos, sr., F; Felix Justo, jr. GK; Danny Gallardo, sr., M.

Outlook: The Marauders lost 15 to graduation and will need the underclassmen and role players to step up on offense this fall.

Sierra

Coach: Todd Hale, fifth season

Last season: 5-9

Key players: Diego Velasco, jr., M; David Leal, sr. D.

Outlook: With Velasco poised for a breakout junior season and a steady senior captain in Leal anchoring the back line, coach Todd Hale expects his Stallions to enjoy their strongest season in years.

Widefield

Coach: Abbey Kennedy, first season

Last season: 4-10-1

Key players: Travis Rader, sr., GK.

Outlook: With all-conference goalkeeper Travis Rader anchoring the defense, the Gladiators' 12 seniors are determined to make the playoffs.

PIKES PEAK CONFERENCE

Air Academy

Coach: Espen Hosoien, 13th season

Last season: 13-4-1 (state playoffs)

Key players: Brayden Jonswold, so. D; Ryan Self, jr. M; Cal Yocum, jr. M; Kristian Hooker, jr. F; Andrew Hiester, sr., M/F; Thomas Beatty, so., GK.

Outlook: If the defense gels, the proud program should meet the high expectations the preseason No. 4 state ranking brings.

Cheyenne Mountain

Coach: Tomas Martinez (sixth season)

Last season: 15-3 (state semifinalist)

Key players: Luke White, sr. F; Sam Alvares, sr., D; Chase McCleary, Jr. D; Matt Depeppe, sr., M; Sam Kilimann, jr. M.

Outlook: The Indians will look to possess the ball, but they will need someone besides White to step up and finish over the course of the team's most challenging schedule in years.

Discovery Canyon

Coach: Flavio Mazzetti, second season

Last season: 7-7-1

Key players: Ryan Clancy, sr., D; Michael Kuenzli, sr., M; Nico Barone, sr., F; Collin Coon, sr., D; Lars Unger, sr., M/F.

Outlook: The defense, led by senior captain Ryan Clancy, could be a strength while versatile German exchange student Lars Unger may play at multiple positions. After losing seven starters, the Thunder will need players to step forward on offense.

Falcon

Coach: Matthew McCluan (sixth season)

Last season: 5-9-1

Key players: Dorian Quillen, so., F.

Outlook: Coach Matthew McCluan likes the offensive potential of the fleet-footed Falcons, but needs a solid goalkeeper to emerge.

Lewis-Palmer

Coach: Brian Barkey (fifth season)

Last season: 9-6-1 (state playoffs)

Key players: Jackson Neal, sr., M; Brayden Forrester, sr., M/D; Hayden McPhearson, sr., GK; Connor Davis, sr., D/M; JG Morrison, sr., F; Dylan Turner, sr., D; Alex Hilton sr., D.

Outlook: The Rangers look poised to close the gap between themselves and 4A's best with 15 seniors, including all-conference honorees Neal, Forrester and McPhearson, coming off a state playoff appearance last fall.

Palmer Ridge

Coach: Nick Odil

Last season: 9-8 (state playoffs)

Key players: Justin Roewer, sr. M; Nick Boldvich, jr., D; Larry Diaz, sr., F; Matt Grant, Sr., F; Dominic Loureiro, jr., D; John Neptune, jr., D; Mason Cresap, sr. GK; Michael Rodgers, jr. GK; Brandon Pappas, sr. M.

Outlook: The Bears will build from the back line with a lot of experience back on defense and goalkeeper.

Sand Creek

Coach: Jeremy Tafoya, seventh season

Last season: 5-10

Key players: Jesse Bridge, jr.; Garrett Kramer, jr.; Caden Gilbert, jr.; Jayden Austin, so.; Juan Hernandez, jr., Alex Le Blanc Quaney, sr.

Outlook: Last year's sophomores and juniors are a year older and that experience may help the Scorpions make the postseason.

Class 3A

TRI-PEAKS CONFERENCE

Atlas Prep

Coach: Teo Jackson, first season

Last season: New varsity program

Key players: Vincent Rivas, Demetrio Araiza.

Outlook: The new team enters its inaugural season with a positive outlook, coach Teo Jackson said.

Colorado Springs Christian School

Coach: Jason Rollins, fifth season

Last season: 12-4-1 (state playoffs)

Key players: Ross Norwood, sr., GK; Gabe Sherwood, sr., M; Lookens Smith, so. M; Tanner McKay, jr., M; Alec Tanaka, jr. D.

Outlook: A strong returning cast with a sprinkling of new talent promises to make the Lions competitive at the league and state level.

Ellicott

Coach: Max Klekot, first season

Last season: New varsity program

Key players: Axel Perez, Danny Galavis, Fernando Gil, Cristian Dorado.

Outlook: The Thunderhawks enter their first varsity campaign with high hopes after winning seasons posted by this new varsity team at the middle school and junior varsity levels.

Fountain Valley

Coach: Byron Dacy (fourth season)

Last season: 15-3-2 (3A state runner-up)

Key players: Ian Strine, sr., MF; Brian Jung, jr., D; Will Graney, jr., MF; Garrett Pattee, sr., D; Galen Kelly, jr., MF.

Outlook: The nine returning starters, including second-team all-state Strine and all-state honoree Jung along the back line, suggest the Danes, ranked third in 3A in the CHSAA preseason poll, have the pieces for another state championship bid.

Manitou Springs

Coach: Ben Mack, 15 seasons

Last season: 5-9

Key players: Jonathan Gerdes, jr., F; Ted Weiss, sr., M; Cullen Cote, fr.

Outlook: With seven freshmen playing large roles, including four as likely starters, the Mustangs will need some time to develop.

St. Mary's

Coach: Gregg Braha, first season (13 with girls)

Last season: 3-11-1

Key players: Thomas O'Connor, sr., MF; Jacob Gonzales, sr. MF; Diego Zapata, sr. F.

Outlook: The Pirates bring in a winning coach to lay the groundwork for a successful program. The three senior returnees, including Tri-Peaks first-teamer O'Connor, will need to mentor a thin defense.

Vanguard School

Coach: Scott Simons, second season

Last season: 12-4 (league runner-up, state playoffs)

Key players: Jeremy Allgood, jr., M; Chris Sudduth, jr. F; Daniel Simons, jr., M/F.

Outlook: All-league first-team honorees Allgood and school scoring record holder Sudduth (24 goals) are back, joined by midfielder/forward Daniel Simons. The defense will need to improve as the team replaces seven starters.

Not reporting: CSS, ECA, Mesa Ridge, Vista Ridge and Woodland Park.
