While wind blew away some games early in the week, it looks like snow should hold off until competitions are done this week.

Like you, we're hoping that's the case, especially when there are several great rivalries that resume and a battle between last season's Class 4A boys' basketball state champs and the two-time defending 3A state champions.

Here's a look at what we're watching this weekend.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

Doherty (8-3) vs. Palmer (4-9)

When: Friday, 8 p.m.

Where: Palmer High School

What to know: This intense rivalry lived up to the hype last season when Doherty's Dalven Brushier hit the game-winner with 1.9 seconds left in the first meeting. The Spartans won the rematch and have won three in a row over the Terrors. Doherty is 2-0 in the 5A Colorado Springs Metro League and looking like one of the teams to beat for the crown. Palmer is 1-1, losing to Liberty after having won its opener over Fountain-Fort Carson. Brevin Brimble leads the Spartans at 21.2 points per game, while Joe Golden averages 8.9 points and 9.3 rebounds. Sophomore Darien Meyers leads the Terrors in scoring with 8.9 ppg, while Dom Jackson averages 8.5.

Pueblo West (9-1) vs. CSCS (7-1)

When: Saturday, 7 p.m.

Where: Colorado Springs Christian School

What to know: Well, as of Wednesday, this game pitting last season's 4A champion in Pueblo West against two-time defending 3A champion CSCS was still on. Surprising because so far Mother Nature has twice managed to prevent this matchup, part of the Rampart New Year's Classic, from happening - once for snow, once for wind. Both teams look like defending champs so far with just two losses between them. West features three players averaging double digits in points, led by David Simental's 18.7. Pierre Taylor averages 15.9 and Nieyeme Smyer-Williams 13.7. Justin Engesser averages 22 ppg and 9.1 rebounds for the Lions, while Noah Hopkins averages 12.7 ppg.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

Manitou Springs (3-4) vs. St. Mary's (8-0)

When: Friday, 6 p.m.

Where: St. Mary's High School

What to know: Another great rivalry game for the weekend, this one featuring 3A Tri-Peaks League opponents. The teams split last year's meeting. Manitou Springs went on to reach the 3A title game, while St. Mary's is off and running this season. Shelby Megyeri leads the Mustangs with 18 ppg, while Calleen Sienknecht is averaging 13.8. The host Pirates are led by Olivia Florek's 13 ppg, one of three players averaging double digits on the team. Makenna Bodette adds 11.9 and freshman Josephine Howery 10.4.

Cañon City (3-6) vs. Sierra (5-5)

When: Saturday, 2 p.m.

Where: Sierra High School

What to know: These two teams figure to be near the top of the heap when the final weeks in the 4A CSML arrive, so neither can afford to lose now. The Tigers are 1-1 in league, Sierra 2-1. The Stallions swept last season's games. Freshman Jerika Moore leads the Tigers at 14.6 ppg. Sierra also is led by a freshman, with D'Nae Wilson averaging 11.5 ppg. Gyani Sami averages 9.4 ppg and 11.9 rebounds.
