Friday's prep roundup: Air Academy baseball completes sweep of Cheyenne Mountain

Highlights from Friday's high school sports scene around the Pikes Peak region.

BASEBALL

Air Academy 5, Cheyenne Mountain 2

At Air Academy: A day after getting a strong performance from James Verlinde, Air Academy (12-4, 8-3 5A/4A Pikes Peak Athletic Conference) got another effective outing from Micah Bregard to sweep the season series with Pikes Peak region 4A No. 1 Cheyenne Mountain (14-3, 9-3).

The win puts the Kadets a half game behind the Indians in the race for the PPAC crown with a week to go.

Bregard worked around six hits and seven walks to hold the Indians to two runs, one earned. He struck out five.

The Kadet bats made sure the effort would stand. Graham Doran drove in two runs, while Sam Cregan had two hits, a run scored, a sac fly and an RBI.

Aaron Berkhoff had two hits and a run for the Indians, who took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third.

The Kadets answered with three in the bottom of the third and two in the fourth.

Mesa Ridge 23, Harrison 0, 3 innings

At Harrison: Mesa Ridge (8-8, 6-0 4A Colorado Springs Metro League) banged out 18 hits, scored 11 runs in the first inning and ended the game against Harrison (1-15, 0-6) early.

Jaeden Hegmann tripled twice, doubled and drove in seven runs. Daevion Kinnard scored three runs and drove in four and Cameron Reinsch and Reece Bishop each drove in three, for Mesa Ridge, which leads the conference. Canon City is second at 4-0 in league play.

The Grizzlies and Tigers meet Tuesday.

Dolores Huerta 11, Florence 7

At Florence: Florence (2-13) gave up five runs in the top of the six to blow a late, one-run lead and fall to Dolores Huerta Prep (11-4).

The Huskies scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to grab a 7-6 lead, only to watch the Scorpions rally in the next inning.

Elizabeth 14, Mitchell 1, 5 innings

At Mitchell: Gage Smith drove in three runs to lead Elizabeth (7-8, 3-2 4A CSML) past Mitchell (4-9, 0-5) in five innings.

GIRLS' SOCCER

Discovery Canyon 6, Falcon 0

At Falcon: Jordan Alcon scored in the fifth minute and Discovery Canyon (7-5-1, 3-2 5A/4A PPAC) took off from there, blanking Falcon (4-9, 1-4).

Alcon added a second goal and had two assists, while Anette Galaviz scored twice in the first half for the Thunder.

The Thunder, who entered the day No. 22 in RPI, play Palmer Ridge and Cheyenne Mountain next week.

"We're right in the mix," coach Andy Liddle said. "The fact we have two high-ranking RPI games next week, . really it's a playoff week."

Canon City 8, Pueblo East 0

At Pueblo East: Seven players scored goals to lead Canon City (9-3-1) past Pueblo East (6-7).

Macy French scored twice for the Tigers, who led 6-0 at the break.

Pueblo Centennial 5, Fountain-Fort Carson 0

At Fountain-Fort Carson: Class 4A Pueblo Centennial (10-3) scored four goals in the second half to break open the game against 5A Fountain-Fort Carson (1-11).

Tori Mitrick scored three goals for the Bulldogs.

Vanguard 10, Ellicott 1

At Vanguard: The Vanguard School (5-6) scored five goals in each half to beat Ellicott (0-13).

GIRLS' LACROSSE

Liberty 22, Rampart 9

At D20 Stadium: Liberty (5-6, 3-3 Southern League) scored 11 goals in each half to beat Rampart (2-10, 2-4).

Pine Creek 17, Pueblo West 3

At Pueblo West: Pine Creek (10-4, 4-2 Southern League) scored 13 goals in the first half and never looked back against Pueblo West (3-9, 0-6).

Madeleine Bourgois scored a game-high five goals and added an assist, while Brittney White added four goals and an assist.

Palmer Ridge vs. Cheyenne Mountain, ppd.

The game between Palmer Ridge and Cheyenne Mountain was postponed at halftime due to weather.

The Bears were leading 5-3 at the half.

The teams are planning to reschedule for next week to complete the game.

BOYS' LACROSSE

Cheyenne Mountain 20, Pueblo West 8

At Cheyenne Mountain: Pikes Peak region No. 2 Cheyenne Mountain (9-3, 5-0 4A Southern) cruised past Pueblo West (6-4, 2-2) for the Indians' fifth consecutive victory.
