Friday's prep roundup: Doherty football team rolls to win



Doherty 43, Overland 16

At Overland: Pikes Peak region 5A No. 1 Doherty rebounded from a 65-27 loss to Grandview last week with a resounding win. The Spartans (7-2, 3-1 5A Mt. Massive) led 43-3 at one point, and remain second in the conference standings.

Doherty hosts winless Boulder next week, and can clinch a playoff spot with a victory.

Pine Creek 41, Widefield 7

At D-20 Stadium: It was smooth sailing for 4A No. 1 Pine Creek, as Brock Domann accounted for five of the six touchdowns for the Eagles, who led 41-0 at the half.

Domann found both Peter Isais and Damario Portillos for two touchdowns apiece through the air, and he also added a rushing score.

Bo Epperson scored a defensive touchdown for the only score Domann didn't have a hand in.

Pine Creek is now 7-2 and 4-0 in 4A Southern play, and can wrap up the conference title with a win at Mesa Ridge next week.

Vista Ridge 45, Palmer 14

At Garry Berry: 4A No. 3 Vista Ridge (6-3, 4-0 4A PPAC) won its fourth straight in dominating fashion, and will now play Rampart next week in the regular-season finale, with the conference title on the line.

Palmer falls to 1-8 and 1-3 in conference play.

Lewis-Palmer 36, Falcon 8

At Lewis-Palmer: The 3A No. 2 Rangers pulled away in the second half after only leading 15-8 at the break.

Lewis-Palmer (8-1, 3-1 3A Southern) closes the regular season at Woodland Park next week before turning its attention to the 3A playoffs.

Falcon (4-5, 3-1) now falls to third in the conference standings.

Palmer Ridge 48, Kennedy 29

At Kennedy: Palmer Ridge built a 35-0 lead in the second quarter en route to a fifth straight victory and a spot alone atop the 3A East Metro standings.

The Bears' offense continued to operate at a high level, led by a pair of long touchdown passes from Ty Evans. Anthony Roberson caught a 40-yard score from Evans, and also ran for a 50-yard touchdown for Palmer Ridge (6-2, 3-0 3A East Metro), while Ben Busath contributed a 45-yard scoring run, and the Bears' defense scored a pair of touchdowns.

Mesa Ridge 40, Air Academy 14

At Mesa Ridge: Dante Johnson ran for 162 yards and two touchdowns, and Dylan Mileto threw a pair of touchdown passes, and also ran for one for Mesa Ridge.

The Grizzlies (6-3, 3-1 4A Southern) led 28-0 at the half, and have won three of their last four as they head into a big showdown against Pine Creek.

Air Academy (1-8, 0-4) got touchdown runs from Dylan Ecker and Troyer Morse.

Ponderosa 45, Cheyenne Mountain 0

At Cheyenne Mountain: Ponderosa, one of the top 4A teams in the state, slowly built its lead, as it was up 21-0 at the half and 38-0 after the third quarter.

Cheyenne Mountain (5-4, 1-3 4A Foothills) has lost three straight after a 5-1 start.

Cañon City 27, Woodland Park 14

At Woodland Park: A week after nearly dethroning the No. 1 3A team in the state, Discovery Canyon, Cañon City (3-6, 1-3 3A Southern) took care of the Panthers (2-7, 0-4) relatively easily.

Sierra 28, Pueblo Central 20

At Sierra: The Stallions (1-8, 1-3 3A South Central) rallied from a 13-6 halftime deficit to pick up their first victory of the season.

Pueblo South 43, Sand Creek 7

At Sand Creek: It was another lopsided defeat for Sand Creek (1-8, 0-4 4A Foothills), which has lost four in a row by an average of 30 points per game.


3A State Tournament First Round

CSCS 7, Ridgway 0

At UCCS: The No. 5-seeded Lions got five goals from sophomore Lookens Smith to cruise to the second round.

Tanner MacKay added a goal and an assist, Jared Smit scored a goal and David Benthem chipped in with two assists for CSCS (14-2).

The Lions will host No. 12 Bruce Randolph at 1 p.m. Saturday at UCCS in the second round.

St. Mary's 2, The Pinnacle 0

At Colorado Academy: The 19th-seeded Pirates scored once in each half to grab an upset win over the No. 14 Timberwolves.

Diego Zapata scored off an assist from Wyatt Barton in the 34th minute, and then Zapata returned the favor, assisting on a Barton score in the 67th minute.

St. Mary's (9-6-1) now faces regional host No. 3 Colorado Academy in the second round at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Jefferson 2, Fountain Valley 0

At Coal Ridge: The Danes saw their season come to an end in the biggest first-round upset in the 3A bracket. No. 9-seeded Fountain Valley (8-7-1) couldn't find the back of the net against the No. 24 Saints.

Kent Denver 5, James Irwin 1

At Kent Denver: The No. 32 Jaguars (9-7) were blitzed early, as Kent Denver scored five times in the first half. David Felman did most of the damage, scoring four times for the top-seeded Sun Devils.


Cheyenne Mountain Invite

Lewis-Palmer 3, Mesa Ridge 0

Lewis-Palmer 3, Longmont 0

At Cheyenne Mountain: Lewis-Palmer made quick work of Mesa Ridge 25-10, 25-9, 25-15. The Rangers won their second match of the day, over Longmont, 25-12, 25-22, 25-12, led by 15 kills and 14 digs from Michaela Putnicki, and 10 kills and 13 digs from Lydia Bartalo. McKenna Sciacca had 37 assists for 4A No. 1 Lewis-Palmer (21-0).

Cheyenne Mountain 3, Grandview 1

Cheyenne Mountain 3, Valor Christian 1

At Cheyenne Mountain: The Indians (15-6) came back from a loss to Lewis-Palmer last week, and a setback to Denver East on Wednesday, with two victories over strong teams in their host tournament.

Cheyenne Mountain defeated 5A Grandview 25-13, 19-25, 25-13, 25-19, led by 18 kills and 13 digs from Casey Ahrendsen and 12 kills from Ellie Gubser. Makayla Patterson had 43 assists for the Indians against Grandview.

4A No. 2 Cheyenne Mountain then topped Valor Christian. No scores were reported.
