Friday's prep roundup: Doherty in hunt for team title after first day of Class 5A Region 3 wrestling tournament

Class 5A Region 1

At Arvada West: Fountain-Fort Carson's Taylor Vasquez (126 pounds), Khalid Peters (138), Wyatt Price (145) and Kyle Stalder (170) all advanced to the tournament's semifinals, and the Trojans sat in fourth place in the team standings with 50 points.

Brighton leads with 112 points, followed by Grand Junction's 79 and Arvada West's 78.

Class 5A Region 2

At Adams City: Coronado's Johnny Lopez (138) and KJ Kearns (145) have secured at least sixth-place finishes after impressive showings on the first day. They went 3-0, with Lopez receiving a first-round bye, and lifted the Cougars to ninth place in the team standings with 25 points.

Pomona is in first with 101 points.

Palmer's Dylan Owens-Hailey is staying in the championship rounds after he pinned Legend's Kade Syddall in the 132 quarterfinals.

Class 5A Region 3

At Poudre: Doherty is in third place with 89.5 points, thanks to eight wrestlers still alive in the championship matches. Legacy is in first with 95 points, followed by Poudre's 90.

Doherty's Daniel Joey Shaw (126), Maverick Keigher (138), Tony Llamido (145), Zach Szostak (152), Jack Mann (160), Logan Maslanik (170), Keaton Adams (195), Siandre Agaalii (220) all advanced to the semifinals of their respective weight classes.

Those wrestlers have recorded 10 pins so far.

Class 5A Region 4

At Broomfield: Rampart's Benjamin Bancroft remains in the hunt for a tournament title after he beat Broomfield's John Beau Hostler 7-2 in the 138 quarterfinals.

The Rams are in 11th place.

Castle View is atop the team standings with 92.5 points.

Class 4A Region 1

At Pueblo County: Bailey Badwound (120), Jason Hanenberg (132), Will Markworth (138), Zane Hall (152), Brady Badwound (160) and Alex Mays (182) led the way for Air Academy by advancing to the tournament's semifinals. The Kadets are in fourth place with 71 points -- behind Pueblo West (117), Pueblo County (110.5) and Pueblo South (77).

Air Academy's Martin Martinez (220) received a quarterfinal bye.

Falcon finished the first day of the tournament with 59.5 points, thanks to Kenneth Crosby (106), Caleb Sherrill (160) and Jarrod Davis (195) staying in the championship rounds.

Gage Bonewell (120) and Ronnie Salazar (152) advanced to the semifinals for Vista Ridge, which is in eighth with 35.5 points.

Sand Creek's Caesar Sanchez (113) and Uziel Rivera (170) each went 2-0 as Rivera finished with two pins. The Scorpions are ninth with 34 points.

Also, Palmer Ridge's Nick Stiltner (126), Harrison's Sergio Alvarado (126) and Liberty's Jason Waters (145) advanced to the semifinals.

Class 4A Region 2

At Lincoln: Cheyenne Mountain finished the first day of the tournament with 86 points, behind first-place Pueblo East's 98.

Chase Johnson (106), Ian Diffendaffer (120), Rick Stark (126), Luke Antonia (132), Mike McFadden (138), Kevin Hooks (145), Miklo Gibb (152), Cian Quiroga (195) and Deonte Bridges (220) all advanced to the semifinals for the Indians.

Class 4A Region 3

At Northridge: With 10 wrestlers in the tournament's semifinal matches, Canon City is in first place in the team standings with 94.5 points.

Greeley Central is right behind the Tigers with 91.

Canon City's Zeon Ortega (106), Joey Gauna (113), James Ruona (126), Shane Coffey (132), Trace Borrego (138), Zac Hanenberg (145), Bailey McBride (152), Mason Repshire (170), Jeffery Winborne (182) and Luis Ronquillo (195) all stayed alive in the championship rounds.

Class 4A Region 4

At Golden: Mesa Ridge scored 80 points to sit second after the tournament's first day but the Grizzlies are well behind Windsor's 124.5.

Widefield (70.5), Discovery Canyon (68.5), Pine Creek (63.5), Lewis-Palmer (51) rounded out the top six.

Mesa Ridge advanced six wrestlers to semifinals: Devin Lueck (120), Malachi Chambers (138), Devin Haller (145), Elijah Valdez (152), Adam Tichenor (160), Jared Volcic (195), Dominick Fini (220) and Michael True (285).

Class 3A Region 4

At Pueblo Central: Florence is in fifth place with 59.5 points after Johnny Masopust (113), Ty Addington (152), Logan Kenline (160), Keaton Green (170) and Parker North-Wanner advanced to the semifinals.

Salida is in first with 68.5 points, while The Classical Academy (49.5) and Woodland Park (47) are in sixth and eighth, respectively.

Class 2A regionals

Peyton sits in second place in the Region 4 tournament at Otero Junior College, as Iley Tuttle (106), Lane Wilfong (113), Colton Murray (132), Jackson Firebaugh (138), Austin Hermes (152) and Nathan McLarty (182) qualified for the semifinals.

In the Region 2 tournament at Sanford, Hanover is tied for eighth place with 28 points. Hanover's Brandon Clark (195) pinned his opponent in the quarterfinals match.


Vista Ridge 66, Palmer Ridge 47

At Vista Ridge: Payton Kaiser exploded for 26 points and Raymon Harper added 12 as Vista Ridge (13-9, 7-5) held Palmer Ridge to just 17 points in the first half of the Class 5A/4A Pikes Peak Athletics Conference game.

Anthony Rosenstrauch scored 11 for Palmer Ridge (14-8, 7-6).

Liberty 61, Pine Creek 57

At Pine Creek: Kyle Bohuslavsky led with 22 points and Moz Doria added 16 as the Lancers (16-6, 7-4) lit up Pine Creek (8-13, 3-7) with a 26-9 third quarter in the Class 5A Colorado Springs Metro League game.

Lamar 76, James Irwin 42
At James Irwin: Tavi Mulitauopele scored 18 points but the Jaguars (4-13, 3-7) couldn't over an 18-5 second quarter by Lamar (4-13, 3-7) in the Class 3A Tri-Peaks League game.


Lamar 73, James Irwin 0

At James Irwin: The score isn't a typo. Without arguably their best player Krystina Hagood, the Jaguars were shut out by the defending Class 3A champion Lamar in the Class 3A Tri-Peaks League game.
James Irwin hasn't won a game since Jan. 16.
"With defending champs coming in, I knew it was going to be hard," Jaguars coach Anthony Byrd said.

Mesa Ridge 79, Mitchell 17

At Mesa Ridge: Ashley Bowen had 14 points, six rebounds and five blocks as three others scored in double figures for the Grizzlies, who took control from the start of the Class 4A Colorado Springs Metro League game.

Chloe Welch finished with 12 points and Angelina Jackson and Monet Hubbard added 11 apiece for Mesa Ridge (18-2, 14-0), which hasn't lost a game since Dec. 6.

The Grizzlies finished 32-8 and 20-0 in the first and second quarters against Mitchell (0-20, 0-13).

Liberty 47, Pine Creek 39

At Pine Creek: Jayda Lyon led with 19 points and Jordan Valentine added 11 as the Lancers (16-6, 8-3) had a 21-13 halftime lead in the Class 5A Colorado Springs Metro League game.

The Lancers broke a 10-game losing streak to Pine Creek. The last win against the Eagles came on Jan. 29, 2013.

Bri Bailey scored 19 points for Pine Creek (10-11, 5-5).

Air Academy 52, Falcon 16

At Air Academy: Mary Parchinski had 12 points and Katlyn Blacksten chipped in 10 as the Kadets (20-1, 12-0) jumped to a 32-4 halftime lead in the Class 5A/4A Pikes Peak Athletics Conference game.

Falcon (8-13, 4-8) lost for the first time in three games.


Class 5A State Championships

At Edora Pool Ice Center: Lewis-Palmer's Meredith Rees put on quite a first day at the state meet. In the 100-yard backstroke preliminary rounds, the junior had the second best time of 58.14 seconds -- right behind Fossil Ridge's Bayley Stewart, who finished in 55.77.

Rees also seeded fourth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.15. Fossil Ridge's Kylee Alons had the fastest prelim time of 50.74.

Lewis-Palmer's Madeline Bane, Faith McAllister, Hannah Day and anchor Katelyn McClelland teamed up to finish the 200 freestyle relay in 1:42.86, the eighth-best mark of the day. The top time was 1:35.62 by Fossil Ridge, which is the defending team state champion.

Elsewhere, Rees, McClelland, Day and Jessica Wyman finished the 200 medley relay in 1:50.44 for the eighth-best time, enough to qualify for Saturday's top finals heat.

Last year, Lewis-Palmer placed fifth at the state meet. This year, the Rangers are ranked ninth in 5A by the Colorado High School Activities Association.


Fort Collins 11, Air Academy 1

At Sertich: Donavon Porter scored Air Academy's lone goal in the final period as Fort Collins (10-1) jumped to a 3-0 lead.

The Kadets fell to 2-14.

Summit 9, Liberty 4

At Stephen C. West: Connor McIlhany scored two goals for the Lancers (3-12), who went on a 3-goal rally in the second period but ultimately fell short against Summit (6-7).
