Cheyenne Mountain

Coach: Mike Paige

Key Players: Jack Clancy, senior, attacker; August Johnson, junior, midfielder; Luke Buck, senior, defender; Cullen Nordamen, senior, attacker; Jack Bell, senior, midfielder

2016 record: 14-4; state semifinalists

What to Know: Paige said his program, which was one game away from a state championship appearance in 2015 and 2016, has been building for the last six years.

The program is up to 67 players this season, according to Paige, and will rely on the solid team character that has been built.

Johnson, a junior and a preseason All-American, racked up 53 goals and 14 assists in 2016. The Indians were No. 1 in The Gazette Preps Pikes Peak region preseason rankings.

Air Academy

Coach: John Mandico (second season)

Key Players: Defense: Trevor Perkey, senior; Ben Jones, senior; Tak Kreb, senior; Colt O'Connell, senior

Offense: Austin Konnath, senior; Braiden Schweitzer, senior; Noah Thornally, sophomore

2016 Record: 11-7; state semifinalists

What to Know: The Kadets fell 15-13 to eventual state champion Valor Christian in the 2016 semifinals. Mandico said he lost a solid group of seniors last year, but that his players are ready to step up and fill that void.

Air Academy, No. 3 in The Gazette Preps preseason Pikes Peak rankings, will rely on solid face-off play as the season progresses.

St. Mary's

Coach: Isaac Anderson (fifth season)

Key Players: Nelson Hogan, senior, midfielder; Chance Podoll, senior, defender

2016 Record: 12-5; state quarterfinalists

What to Know: For a school that competes in the 3A classification in most sports, one of the biggest challenges for Anderson is a school the size of the Pirates' competing with 4A and 5A teams.

While many of the players are new to lacrosse, St. Mary's will look to rely on a stingy defense to keep pace this year.
