Monday's baseball roundup: Pine Creek splits Day 1 of 5A state tournament

CLASS 5A

First round

Pine Creek 3, Rock Canyon 2

At Metro State: Riley Cornelio was the star of Pine Creek’s first-round state playoff game against No. 7 Rock Canyon, as the pitcher threw five solid innings and hit 3 for 3 with an RBI.

Cornelio struck out six batters and allowed just three hits in his outing, which was cut short due to pitch count restrictions.

Justin Olson came in relief and fanned three of six batters faced.

Evan Faucher also had a solid day at the plate. He hit 2 for 2 - a double and a triple, with an RBI.

Although No. 2 Pine Creek racked up eight hits against Rock Canyon, the Jaguars turned three double plays.

Second round

Heritage 12, Pine Creek 2, 5 innings

At Metro State: Things unraveled for Pine Creek late in its second-round playoff game against No. 3 Heritage, as the No. 2 Eagles scored all 12 of their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

After leading 2-0 thanks to a two-RBI double from Zach Heisler in the third, Jay Onken struggled on the mound, allowing seven runs in the bottom of the fifth before being relieved by Olson, who also had trouble controlling Heritage’s hot bats. Five more runs came across before the game was called due to the 10-run rule.

Only six of Heritage’s runs were earned.

Pine Creek will face either No. 1 Mountain Vista or No. 4 Rocky Mountain on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m.

CLASS 4A

Due to rain on the field the first round of the Class 4A tournament was postponed again. No. 4 Cheyenne Mountain will play No. 5 Evergreen on Tuesday at 12:30 at All-Star Park in Denver.
