Pikes Peak rankings: Big week ahead for Fountain-Fort Carson girls and other teams on the cusp

Team records as of Feb. 12

Class 5A

  1. Doherty (18-4)
  2. Rampart (15-6)
  3. Liberty (16-6)

Dropped out: N/A

Breakdown: Rampart finally made the jump into the No. 2 spot in the Pikes Peak rankings after beating the Lancers for the third time this season. Although Liberty remains ahead of Rampart in the MaxPreps rankings thanks to a stronger strength of schedule rating, the Rams’ two-point win over Liberty pushed them into the second spot.

Doherty remains atop of the 5A rankings after a busy week. The Spartans claimed a 27-point win over No. 2 Rampart, but also fell to 5A No. 4 Denver East by five points.

Class 4A

  1. Lewis-Palmer (19-2)
  2. Widefield (17-4)
  3. Falcon (16-5)

Dropped out: N/A

Breakdown: The Rangers are on a six-game winning streak, but will be challenged with Rival Palmer Ridge on the docket this week. The Bears broke Lewis-Palmer’s streak to begin the season and sent the Rangers’ on a two-game skid.

Widefield moves up to No. 2 in the Pikes Peak rankings despite remaining three spots behind Falcon in the MaxPreps 4A rankings. According to MaxPreps, Falcon has a strength of schedule rating of 9.2, while Widefield’s schedule is rated a 4.3, but the Gladiators are on an 11-game winning streak and went 3-0 last week. Widefield will face The Classical Academy and Canon City this week.

Falcon had two-win week last week, and will face Cheyenne Mountain and Discovery Canyon this week. Last time out against the Thunder the Falcons claimed a one-point win.

Class 3A and below

  1. The Vanguard School (15-2)
  2. Calhan (13-4)
  3. CSCS (12-6)

On the cusp: Evangelical Christian (12-5) - Evangelical Christian has won five of its last six games, outscoring opponents 312-189. The Eagles will face Colorado Springs School and Miami-Yoder to finish the regular season.

Breakdown: Although The Vanguard School dropped one spot on MaxPreps, the Coursers are still holding strong at No. 1 in the Pikes Peak rankings. Last week Vanguard earned a win over Manitou Springs and will close out the regular season against Trinidad and Rye this week.

CSCS ends its regular season at No. 3 in the Pikes Peak rankings. The Lions finished off the year with a big win over St. Mary’s, and will have to wait more than two weeks before the final 3A-1A state playoff seeds are released.

No. 2 Calhan has a challenging week ahead to close the regular season as the Bulldogs face 2A No. 0 Simla on Wednesday.

Class 5A

  3. Pine Creek (10-11)

Dropped out: Fountain-Fort Carson (11-10)

Breakdown: After a few weeks of bliss in the 5A Pikes Peak rankings, Fountain-Fort Carson dropped out of the top three with a three-point overtime loss to Pine Creek last week. The Trojans will have one more opportunity to find redemption against the Eagles as they face off again on Tuesday.

Fountain-Fort Carson finishes its regular season on Friday against No. 1 Doherty, which is on a 15-game winning streak. Last week the Spartans pulled off a huge two-point win over Denver East in arguably their toughest matchup in the second half of the regular season.

Liberty remains at No. 2 coming off a overtime win over Rampart and a two-point victory against No. 3 Pine Creek last week. The Lancers finish the regular season against Coronado on Tuesday.

Class 4A

  1. Air Academy (20-1)
  2. Mesa Ridge (18-3)
  3. Widefield (17-4)

Dropped out: N/A

Breakdown: Last week Mesa Ridge’s 16-game winning streak was snapped with a two-point loss to Lakewood. Air Academy, though, is still going strong on a 17-game streak, which includes a huge 52-16 win over Falcon last week.

The Kadets finish their regular season against Lewis-Palmer and Cheyenne Mountain, while Mesa Ridge will face Canon City and Sierra this week.

No. 3 Widefield has bounced back after a loss to Mesa Ridge, winning 11 of its last 12. The Gladiators will face Canon City and The Classical Academy to end the regular season.

Class 3A and below

  1. St. Mary’s (17-0)
  2. Colorado Springs Christian (15-3)
  3. Calhan (14-3)

On the cusp: Colorado Springs School (14-3) - The Kodiaks have flown slightly under the radar this season and has remained strong despite a 3-3 record in the 2A Black Forest league. A five-game winning streak was snapped last week with a loss to Simla.

Breakdown: Last week the Pirates reigned supreme in an exciting battle between the state’s best 2A girls teams in a three-point win over Colorado Springs Christian. St. Mary’s remains undefeated heading into the final week of the regular season.

St. Mary’s win snapped the Lions nine-game winning streak, but CSCS will have one more chance to get back on the winning track with a game against Florence on Tuesday to close the regular season.

Calhan will open the last week of the regular season against 2A No. 10 Simla after suffering a four-point defeat by Ellicott on Saturday. The Bulldogs will end their season on Friday against Peyton.
