Regional wrestling roundup: Cheyenne Mountain sends 12 to state

4A Region 3

At Cheyenne Mountain: Cheyenne Mountain is sending 12 of a possible 14 wrestlers to next week's state tournament after winning Class 4A Region 3 behind five regional champions on Saturday at Cheyenne Mountain.

Kevin Hooks won at 126 pounds for the Indians, Mike McFadden at 132, Zach Garrard at 182, Oliver Neumann at 195 and freshman Deonte Bridges, who claimed the 220-pound title.

Cheyenne Mountain finished with 277.5 points.

"We kind of thought that would be a possibility," Indians coach Tyler Seaney said. "As a coach you're always optimistic, but to make it a reality it was awesome. . It was sweet to see that happen."

Not far behind was Canon City, which also had five regional champs and scored 241 points for second place. The Tigers are sending nine to state, including 106-pound regional champ Zeon Ortega, 113 winner Shane Coffey, 120 champ James Ruona, 145-pound champ Zac Hanenberg and 285-pound winner Xavier Byrne.

Pine Creek scored 153 and is sending six wrestlers to state, including defending state champions Peter Isais (160) and Garrett Niel (170), both region winners.

The state tournament begins Thursday at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

4A Region 1

At Lewis-Palmer: Discovery Canyon qualified seven wrestlers to state, including four taking second place, and the Thunder took third as a team at the region.

Vista Ridge's Jeff Flippen won the 285-pound title. Air Academy's Jason Hanenberg won the 126-pound title.

Pueblo County won the region with 302.5 points. Discovery Canyon was third (183.5), Air Academy fifth.

4A Region 4

At Montrose: Behind tournament champions Elijah Valdez (145) and Dominic Fini (220), Mesa Ridge took second place at the region with 206 points and is sending eight wrestlers to state.

Pueblo East won the tournament with 258.5.

Defending champion Deric Cruz took second at 195 pounds, falling in the final on a 9-2 decision to Palisade's Terrance Williams.

Palmer Ridge is taking two to the state tournament.

5A Region 1

At Fountain-Fort Carson: Doherty is sending six wrestlers to state, as the Spartans took fourth at the region as a team with 148 points.

Pomona won the regional with 295.5.

Doherty 120-pound wrestler Collin Metzgar took second.

Palmer's Dre-Son Scruggs (145) advanced to state, taking second at the region.

Rampart is sending three to state, led by Lance Peltier, who finished second at 106 pounds.

Fountain-Fort Carson is sending four to state.

5A Region 4

At Arvada West: Coronado's Stephen Dabelko won the 113-pound division, Jimmy Weaver won at 182 and the Cougars took fourth place at the regional with 179 points while sending seven to state.

Joining Dabelko and Weaver are Nicholas Cote (170) and KJ Kearns (138), who both took second, Angel Flores third (120), Brady Chauvin (third, 152) and Anthony Arellano-Gandy (fourth, 160).

Poudre won the team title with 292.

3A Region 4

At Elizabeth: Ty Addington won the 145-pound regional, one of four Florence wrestlers to qualify for state, as the Huskies took third as a team with 152.5 points.

Lamar took first with 221.

Manitou Springs heavyweight Julian Sanchez is headed back to the state tournament after winning the 285-pound region. Teammate Atticus Fredrickson will join him.

The Classical Academy qualified four and Woodland Park three for state.

2A Region 4

At CSU-Pueblo: Peyton took second with 194 points behind eight state qualifiers, led by defending state champion Britton Holmes (145) and Wyatt Lee (152), both region champs.

Rocky Ford ran away with the region with 325 points.

Ellicott, Calhan and Miami-Yoder are sending two each.
