Rematch between Doherty, Pine Creek in girls' hoops among games to watch

This week we get several matchups between teams in the top three spots of a few conferences.

It's fun to see so many league races separated by only a game and with those games on the horizon this weekend.

 

BOYS' BASKETBALL

Peyton (13-1) vs. Calhan (7-5)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Where: At Calhan High School

What to know: Peyton is 4-0 in the 2A Black Forest League, the last unbeaten conference team. Calhan enters having lost back-to-back games for the second time this season, the second game to Evangelical Christian Academy in league play. It marked the Bulldogs' first league loss. The two teams are first and second in conference. Peyton boasts three players averaging more than 13 points, led by Dominic Gentile's 15.4. Calhan answers with three players averaging in double figures. Ben Kelly leads the way with 11.7 ppg.

 

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

Doherty (17-1) vs. Pine Creek (12-5)

When: Thursday, 7 p.m.

Where: At Pine Creek High School

What to know: Doherty is 8-0 in the 5A CSML and riding a nine-game winning streak. The Spartans won the first meeting by six points but had to go to overtime to do it. Pine Creek is 5-1 in conference play. A win over Doherty and the league title would be up for grabs. Doherty is led by Aubriana Noti's 14.5 ppg. Kalani Poloa adds 14.2 and Mykiaa Minniss 12.8. Pine Creek leans on Courtney Stanton (11.6 ppg) and Gabi O'Connor (10.4) for its scoring.

Simla (10-2) vs. ECA (11-2)

When: Friday, 6:30 p.m.

Where: At Evangelical Christian Academy

What to know: Simla is unbeaten in 2A Black Forest League play. Evangelical Christian is 3-1. A win for the Eagles here would be big and keep them in the league title race. Maggie Kirkpatrick is ECA's main scoring threat, entering the game averaging 15.6 points. Elizabeth Bunker averages 9.8 and April Mann 9.3. Simla is led by Jerraldawn Rector's 13.5 ppg. Sophomore Kegan Hamacher averages 8.5.
