Saturday's prep roundup: Lewis-Palmer volleyball wins Colorado Invite, stays unbeaten

VOLLEYBALL

Colorado Invite

At Cheyenne Mountain: Pikes Peak 4A No. 1 Lewis Palmer (23-0, 7-0 5A/4A Pikes Peak) took the title after defeating 4A No. 2 Cheyenne Mountain (15-8, 6-1) in the semifinals 3-0 and Fossil Ridge (20-3) 3-1 in the final on Saturday.

In the semifinal, Lewis-Palmer won 25-18, 25-22 and 25-9 over Cheyenne Mountain, which was led by senior Casey Ahrendsen, who had eight kills. In the final, Lewis-Palmer lost a set for only the third time this season, as Fossil Ridge took set one 26-24. But then L-P rattled off three victories in a row: 25-18, 25-20 and 25-17, to win. Senior Michaela Putnicki cranked out 21 kills and senior Elizabeth Reich added 13 kills of her own to help lead the Rangers.

2A District 8

Pikes Peak 3A/2A No. 3 Colorado Springs School (21-2, 8-0) motored through district play on Saturday, beating Evangelical Christian Academy, Ellicott and Simla, all in straight sets.

1A District 7

At Elbert: Pikes Peak Christian (13-8, 4-2) struggled Saturday, falling to Genoa-Hugo/Karval (13-10, 6-2) 3-0, Kiowa (21-2, 7-0) 3-0 and Elbert (10-13, 3-4) 3-1. Stats were not provided for Pikes Peak Christian.

FOOTBALL

Rampart 36, Coronado 6

At Rampart: Pikes Peak 4A No. 2 Rampart (7-2, 4-0 4A Pikes Peak) beat Coronado (2-7, 1-3). The Rams jumped out to a 29-0 lead, not allowing Coronado to score until only 7:22 was left in the game. Keion Cross and Joey Williams connected on two touchdown passes of 52 and 22 yards, and Xavier Bishop-Falu scored a rushing and receiving touchdown for Rampart. The win sets up a showdown for the league title between Rampart and 4A No. 3 Vista Ridge (6-3, 4-0) on Friday.

Grand Junction Central 52, Liberty 12

At Grand Junction Central: Liberty (3-6, 1-3 4A Foothills) couldn't keep up with Grand Junction Central (5-4, 2-2) as the Lancers fell behind 27-6 before halftime and 46-12 by the end of the third quarter.

GYMNASTICS

Region 2

At Mountain Range High School: Rampart earned a berth in the state meet Friday and Saturday after finishing second in the region. The Rams recorded a score of 165.7, only behind Elizabeth, which tallied a score of 176.725 to win.

BOYS' SOCCER

Colorado Academy 3, St. Mary's 0

At Colorado Academy: After upsetting No. 14 The Pinnacle 2-0 in the first round of the state tournament on Friday, No. 19 St. Mary's (9-7-1) fell to No. 3 Colorado Academy (12-4-1), ending the season for the Pirates. Colorado Academy scored two goals in the first half to get ahead early.
