J&J Hip Hop Dance & Performing Arts Company was founded more than a decade ago by husband and wife Joseph and Stephanie Cantu. They run the business with the help of their four kids, who are all instructors in various dance styles and members of the Street Legends Dance Crew. The studio will host auditions for World of Dance in April. Those who receive a golden ticket will go on to compete at the championships in California this summer.

Brian Tryon, a certified addiction counselor and photographer, and musician and teacher Chris Bacavis opened Shutter and Strum, a community arts center in the Knob Hill neighborhood, in October. Inside are the Disruptor Gallery, a darkroom and portrait and recording studios. The gallery features works by local under-represented artists, as well as students, and participates in First Friday Downtown events. Tryon and Bacavis offer classes, workshops and programs in film and darkroom photography, gallery curation and management, songwriting, music performance and more.

The new Garfield Art Gallery, in the former, historic Garfield School downtown, which now houses Community Prep School for at-risk high school students, will display local and regional artists, as well as works by students. "Reclamation," featuring abstract expressionist oil paintings by Kevin Persaud, the gallery's second exhibit, will open with a free reception during First Friday Downtown.
