The Class 3A, 4A and 5A baseball state tournaments have been moved to next week to avoid possible rainy conditions, the Colorado High School Athletics Association announced Thursday.

This means Cheyenne Mountain and Pine Creek will start their state tournament runs Monday and Tuesday instead of Friday and Saturday, the original first two dates for the three classifications.

No. 2 Pine Creek (19-2) will play No. 7 Rock Canyon at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Metro State in Denver in the 5A tournament, while No. 4 Cheyenne Mountain (15-6) will face No. 5 Evergreen (15-6) at 12:30 p.m. Monday at All-Star Park in Denver at 4A.

Denver -- the sites of the 5A and 4A tourneys -- is forecast to see a 50-percent chance of rain Friday and an 80-percent Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

The decision to change the start dates is an attempt to complete games in the same time frame, CHSAA said in an article.

"To have one team or two teams play games on Friday and use up a pitcher and have others not have to use a pitcher until Monday undermines pitch counts and interferes with the competitive integrity of the tournament," Bert Borgmann, CHSAA's assistant commissioner, said in a statement.
