Breakdown: Last season, Doherty's only league loss came at Liberty, thanks to TJ Clark's buzzer-beater on Feb. 11, 2016. On Thursday, the Spartans take the short trip back to Lancer Nation for the first time since then. The squads turn around and meet again on Saturday afternoon, this time at Doherty. . Two lengthy streaks will come to an end, one Tuesday and another the following night. On Tuesday, Sierra plays host to Mesa Ridge in a 4A Metro League matchup featuring teams with winning streaks of eight and nine games, respectively. The Stallions have won four straight and 15 of 20 in the series. Meanwhile, Sand Creek (nine-game winning streak) welcomes District 49 rival Vista Ridge (eight straight wins) to "The Tomb" for the next edition of this fantastic matchup headlined by Hunter Maldonado of Vista Ridge and D'shawn Schwartz of Sand Creek, both of whom are headed to Division I schools in Wyoming and Colorado, respectively. Last season, Vista beat Creek for the first time in school history after eight losses on Raymon Harper's buzzer-beating 3-pointer. . 3A isn't void of marquee matchups this week, either. The top two teams in the Pikes Peak region meet Tuesday in Manitou Springs when CSCS, the two-time 3A state champions, comes calling. CSCS has won 15 straight in the series, last falling to the Mustangs on Jan. 26, 2010.

Breakdown: Only Fruita Monument and Highlands Ranch in 5A have more wins (14) than Doherty. The Spartans have won five straight and seem well on their way to reaching and surpassing last season's 18-win total. Speaking of win total, Liberty needs one more to get to double digits, an accomplishment that's happened only three times in the past decade. The 2015-16 squad won 10 during the regular season, then added a historic playoff win to make 11. Air Academy has a 12-game winning streak after winning Monday's game against Falcon. Mesa Ridge takes a six-game winning streak into a home league showdown against Sierra on Tuesday. The Stallions are 6-1 in 4A Metro League play, while the Grizzlies sport a 6-0 record in league play. Mesa Ridge has won nine straight in the series. . While St. Mary's continues to roll along, so too does CSCS. The Lions can snap an 11-game losing streak to Manitou Springs when they travel west on Tuesday. Calhan enters the poll at No. 3, its only losses coming at the hands of Kiowa (10-2) and Simla (7-2), where the Bulldogs suffered a one-point loss Saturday.

 

ICE HOCKEY

Breakdown: Since dropping three straight, Cheyenne Mountain has gone unbeaten in its Past three (2-0-1) heading into Friday's home game against Doherty at Colorado College. Lewis-Palmer has won four straight following an 0-6 start, including its first in league play against Denver East. Up next for the Rangers is a home-and-home against Monarch (7-3). Lewis-Palmer hasn't allowed more than two goals during the streak. Coronado is in the midst of a three-game homestand, having played Rampart on Monday before a meeting District 11 rival Palmer on Thursday. The Cougars meet league-leading Valor Christian on Jan. 30.
