SOFTBALL

Doherty 18, Liberty 10

At Liberty: Angelina Locriccio continued her torrid streak from the plate with five more hits as resurgent Doherty (5-5, 3-3 5A Colorado Springs Metro League) rallied to beat Liberty (1-4, 1-3).

The Spartans have won five straight since opening the season 0-5 - and Locriccio has been a big part of it.

The sophomore has hit in all 10 games and has 23 hits on the year, second most among all players in the 5A classification. Her five hits Thursday - four singles and a double - gives her multiple hits in her past seven games.

"If she gets on a roll she makes us go," said Doherty's Mike Berkey, the school's baseball coach who took over the struggling softball program this season. "She's seeing the ball really well and everything is jumping off her bat."

Locriccio drove in four runs, and Montana Spring and Madison O'Driscol each had three RBIs as the Spartans overcame a 6-0 deficit with 18 runs in the final five innings.

Doherty hasn't had a streak of five wins in at least nine years, according to MaxPreps' records.

"We started believing in ourselves," Berkey said. "Anybody that knows Doherty softball for the last couple of years, and I'll go with what I know, for the last six or seven years, the confidence just hasn't been there.

"Bad things are going to happen but we can get through it. Tonight was a prime example of that."
