Thursday's prep roundup: L-P rallies to hand Cheyenne Mountain first loss in baseball

Highlights from Thursday's high school sports scene around the Pikes Peak region.


Lewis-Palmer 15, Cheyenne Mountain 10

At Lewis-Palmer: Cheyenne Mountain looked to be headed to its 13 straight victory as the Indians held a four lead after five and a half innings.

But then came the bottom of the sixth.

Lewis-Palmer (8-5, 5-3 5A/4A Pikes Peak Athletic Conference) blew open the game with 11 runs and knocked the Pikes Peak region 4A No. 1 Indians (12-1, 7-1) from the ranks of the undefeated.

The Rangers grabbed a 15-8 lead heading to the seventh.

Billy Cook homered, drove in two and had three hits for the Rangers. Johnny Behm added two RBIs.

Jack Denker homered and drove in three runs for the Indians, while Aaron Berkhoff homered and drove in two.

The Indians committed four errors.

Sierra 5, Harrison 0

At Harrison: Adrian Montes threw a no-hitter to lead Sierra (2-10, 1-4 4A Colorado Springs Metro League) past Harrison (1-13, 0-4), and for much of the game the outcome was in doubt.

Sierra didn't get a lead until the fourth inning, going up 1-0, while Montes continued to deal.

He struck out 11 and walked just two batters.

It wasn't until a four-run sixth that the Stallions put the game out of reach.

Marcus Pacheco, Rico Vallejos and Brock Girling each drove in a run.

Palmer Ridge 11, Air Academy 8, 5 innings

At Air Academy: Two days after falling to the Kadets, Palmer Ridge (8-4-1, 5-3 5A/4A PPAC) rebounded with a rain-shortened win over 4A No. 3 Air Academy (9-4, 5-3).

Falcon 7, Discovery Canyon 0

At Falcon: Pikes Peak region 4A No. 2 Falcon (9-4, 5-3 5A/4A PPAC) notched its fourth consecutive win, shutting out Discovery Canyon (5-8, 3-5).

Stats were not reported.

Sand Creek 9, Vista Ridge 8

At Sand Creek: Class 4A Sand Creek (2-11, 1-7 5A/4A PPAC) scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat 5A Vista Ridge (2-11, 1-7).

Canon City 8, Widefield 0

At Canon City: Canon City (10-4, 4-0 4A CSML) held Widefield (6-10, 3-2) to three hits to keep the Tigers perfect in league play.

Canon City scored three runs in both the second and fourth innings. 


Air Academy 1, Cheyenne Mountain 0

At Air Academy: Cassidy Olsen's first-half goal proved to be enough as Air Academy (6-4, 3-1 5A/4A PPAC) shut out Pikes Peak region 4A No. 3 Cheyenne Mountain (5-5, 2-1).

Fountain Valley 7, Rye 1

At Rye: McKenna Monk scored five goals to lead Fountain Valley (5-3) past Rye (2-5-1).

The Danes led 5-0 at the half.

Isabella Montoya scored two goals and dealt two assists.

TCA 11, Widefield 1

At Widefield: Pikes Peak region 4A No. 1 The Classical Academy (10-0, 5-0 4A CSML) cruised past Widefield (3-10, 2-4) behind Hannah Burgo's five goals and two assists in a game that was shortened by the 10-run rule.

Trinity Harvey added two goals and two assists, and Abbie Flannery added two goals for the Titans, who led 8-0 at half.

CSCS 10, Ellicott 0

At Ellicott: Pikes Peak region 3A/2A No. 2 Colorado Springs Christian School (9-1) breezed past Ellicott (0-10) as Gabby Huthoefer scored five goals.

Hannah Wilson had two goals and three assists, helping her set the school record with 30 assists. Grace Rummel had two goals.

Lewis-Palmer 2, Palmer Ridge 0

At Lewis-Palmer: The 4A defending state champion Rangers (10-1, 4-0 5A/4A PPAC) notched a goal in each half to defeat rival Palmer Ridge (5-6, 2-2).

St. Mary’s 10, Dolores Huerta 0

At St. Mary’s: Behind two goals and two assists from Mary Brummel, Pikes Peak region 3A/2A No. 3 St. Mary’s (8-2, 4-0 3A Region 2) ended the game against Dolores Huerta (0-10, 0-5) in the first half because of the 10-goal rule.

Freshmen Katherine Chartier and Cassidy Sorensen each scored twice, while classmate Katie Morales had three assists.

Sand Creek 7, Vista Ridge 0

At Vista Ridge: Freshman Zoey Shank scored three goals to lead 4A Sand Creek (6-5, 1-3 5A/4A) past 5A Vista Ridge (2-7-1, 0-4).

The Scorpions led 5-0 at half. Jaden Davis had two goals.


Coronado 122, Liberty 63

At Coroando: Liberty's Josh Lenzmeier set a pool record in the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.81 seconds but Coronado beat the Lancers in the dual meet.

The Cougars won eight of the 12 events, led by Nicola Zenarolla who won both the 500 freestyle (5:20.66) and the 200 freestyle (1:57.14).

Lenzmeier also won the 100 freestyle (50.80) for the Lancers.


Pine Creek 8, Lakewood 7

At Pine Creek: Pine Creek (5-6, 1-3 5A Jeffco League) scored a big league win over Lakewood (6-5, 1-3), edging the Tigers to get the Eagles’ first win in conference. 


St. Mary's tabs coach

Nicole Robinson, a St. Mary's track and field assistant coach, will take over the cross country program for the Pirates, athletic director Dennis Vigil told The Gazette via email.

Robinson was also an assistant for the cross country teams in the fall. She is a Colorado-Colorado Springs graduate.
