Tuesday's prep roundup: Aaron Berkhoff hits a grand slam to lead Cheyenne Mountain baseball to victory

BASEBALL

Cheyenne Mountain 11, Discovery Canyon 2

At Discovery Canyon: Aaron Berkhoff cleared the bases with the team’s first grand slam to help the Cheyenne Mountain baseball team claim a 4A/5A Pikes Peak conference win over Discovery Canyon.

Berkhoff led the Indians (3-1, 1-0) with three hits and five RBIs, and Jack Denker batted in a pair of runs.

Michael Ellis earned the win on the mound, throwing five full innings and striking out seven batters.

Discovery Canyon is 2-2.

Palmer Ridge 5, Vista Ridge 3

At Palmer Ridge: A sixth-inning spark helped Palmer Ridge to a 4A/5A Pikes Peak win over Vista Ridge.

Palmer Ridge scored all five of its runs in the sixth inning after trailing 3-0 for a majority of the game. Vista Ridge (1-3) scored all three of its runs in the third.

Gabe Halaby, Jake Wade and Jack Wotta each had two hits for the Bears (3-1).

Lewis-Palmer 8, Falcon 6

At Falcon: Falcon staged a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four runs in the final inning, but it was not enough to overcome Lewis-Palmer’s lead in a 4A/5A Pikes Peak conference loss to the Rangers.

Johnny Behm had a home run for the Rangers, and Brady Choban hit 2 for 3 with one RBI.

Choban also earned the win on the mound, throwing six innings and fanning eight batters. Brandon Reynolds was credited with the save.

The Rangers remain undefeated at 5-0. Falcon is 2-2.

Air Academy 12, Sand Creek 1

At Sand Creek: The Kadets jumped off to a 6-1 lead after two innings and didn’t slow down from there, claiming a 4A/5A Pikes Peak conference game against Sand Creek (0-4) in five innings.

Bo Powers led Air Academy (2-1) hitting 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Grant Shandy batted in two thanks to a pair of hits, including a triple. Shandy also got the win, pitching all five innings - throwing just 78 pitches - and fanning 11 batters.

Mesa Ridge 23, Palmer 10

At Palmer: The Grizzlies held an 11-point lead after three innings, and tacked on nine more in the last two innings to claim a nonconference win over Palmer.

Palmer scored three runs in the second, four in the fourth and three in the sixth inning.

Mason Collier had just one hit, but he made it count with a three-RBI triple. Justin Chappell and Cale Fields each had two hits and two RBIs for the Terrors (0-4).

Mesa Ridge is 2-1.

Woodland Park 7, Pueblo Centennial 3

At Runyon Field: Josh Simpson hit 3 for 3 with four RBIs to aid Woodland Park claim a nonconference win over Pueblo Centennial.

Dempsey Battin was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, and also earned the win on the mound for the Panthers (2-1), throwing 6.1 innings, striking out five batters.

The Classical Academy 2, Rampart 1, 9 innings

At TCA: The Classical Academy scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to clinch a one-run nonconference win over Rampart.

Noah Lasecki and Jason Moore batted in runs for the Titans.

Caleb Crews pitched five innings for TCA (1-5) and struck out five batters. Hayden Cooper earned the win in relief in the ninth.

Taylor Zaiger pitched seven solid innings for Rampart, striking out 11 batters along the way.

Caden Jones and Hunter Felts had a pair of hits for the Rams (2-5).

GIRLS' LACROSSE

Cheyenne Mountain 12, Centaurus 11

At Cheyenne Mountain: After back-to-back close losses, the Cheyenne Mountain girls' lacrosse team got back on the winning side with a narrow win over Centaurus.

Nicole Beaulieu led the team with five goals and three assists, and Madelyn Lewis had two goals and one assist.

"Sophomore Nicole Beaulieu led the team in scoring... but the stars of the team were the defenders who kept a tough offense at bay," Cheyenne Mountain coach Marc Luckett said. "Standouts were the three senior defenders Claire Zable, Liz Lajoie and Ellen Lightcap."

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Discovery Canyon 7, Sierra 0

At D-20 Stadium: The Thunder started fast with six goals in the first half on the way to a shutout nonconference win over Sierra.

Discovery Canyon is 3-1. The Stallions are still searching for their first win of the season.

Air Academy 3, Littleton 1

At Littleton: A pair of goals in the second half handed Air Academy a nonconference win over Littleton.

Hanna Chaja, Meagan Bobo and Zoe Sims each scored for the Kadets. Katlyn Blacksten had 13 saves in goal.

Air Academy is 2-2-1.

Sand Creek 10, Coronado 0

At Sand Creek: Seven goals in the first half and three in the second lifted the Scorpions to a nonconference win over Coronado (2-4).

Sand Creek remains undefeated at 4-0.

Evergreen 3, Cheyenne Mountain 0

At Evergreen: Cheyenne Mountain fell in its second straight game in a nonconference loss to Evergreen.

James Irwin 9, Ellicott 0

At James Irwin: Karyme Martinez scored four goals and had two assists in James Irwin's nonconference win over Ellicott.

Deisy Alvarado Salavar had two goals for the Thunderhawks.

CSCS 3, Florence 2

At Florence: The Lions retain its undefeated record with a one-goal 3A Region 2 win over Florence.

Kait Halverson, Katie McGrath and Abby Knedler scored for CSCS (4-0).

Jefferson Academy 1, Manitou Springs 0

At Manitou Springs: Mira Houck scored Jefferson's lone goal in a nonconference win over Manitou Springs.

Alyssa Holladay had 10 saves for the Mustangs (3-1).

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Pine Creek 128, Cheyenne Mountain 57

At Rampart: Andrew Bell and Nicholas Sherman each won a pair of events for Pine Creek in a nonleague dual win.

Bell won the 200 and 500 freestyle races in 1:54.58 and 5:13.63, respectively, and Sherman claimed the 50 free (21.32) and the 100 breaststroke (59.11).

Carsten Erlander earned Cheyenne Mountains only first-place finish with a win in the 100 free in 1:00.73.

Rampart 101, Fountain-Fort Carson 68

At Fountain-Fort Carson: Rampart won all but three events in a 5A Colorado Springs Metro dual meet.

Rampart’s Isaac Shyrock won the 50 freestyle and the 500 free in 23.83 and 5:29.38, respectively.

Fountain Fort Carson’s Garrid Keller won the 100 backstroke (1:04.47) and helped the Trojans to a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay as the anchor. The relay team of Brent Keller, Mitchell Stevens and Dahlton Hazlett to a win in 3:59.40.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Palmer Ridge 6, Discovery Canyon 1

At Palmer Ridge: Palmer Ridge nearly swept Discovery Canyon in a nonconference win, claiming the first six matches before Discovery Canyon’s No. 4 doubles team of Karinne Bratkowsky and Ria Paradkar earned a match win in three sets over Kate Douglas and Tess Kelly.

Palmer Ridge’s No. 1 singles player Keelie Bennett battled for her win over Mattie Kuntzelman, winning the first set 6-4, but falling 7-5 in the second. She won the third 10-7.

At No. 2 singles Kyra Rothwell earned a win 6-3, 6-4 for the Bears.  

Pine Creek 5, Liberty 2

At Pine Creek: The Eagles earned a hard-fought 4A Region 1 win over Liberty thanks in part to two three-set match victories.

At No. 2 singles, Pine Creek’s Shreya Shresta lost the first set to Liberty’s Morgan Childs 5-7, but came back to win the next two 6-3, 6-4. At No. 2 doubles the Pine Creek duo of Alex Heist and Akarea Steele won the first set against Liberty’s Kasey Kruse and Emily McFadden 6-4, but lost the second set 6-3. Heist and Steele won the third set 6-2 for the match win.

Pine Creek remains undefeated at 2-0. Liberty is 1-1 and 0-1 in league play.

Lewis-Palmer 6, Falcon 1

At Falcon: Besides a battle in the No. 1 singles match, Lewis-Palmer earned a swift 4A Region 6 win over Falcon.

Falcon’s Emmalee Root beat Lewis-Palmer’s Rachel Bull 6-1 in set one, but Bull fought back for a close second set. Root ultimately won 7-6 (8-6) for Falcon’s only match win of the day.

The remainder of the matches by Lewis-Palmer 6-0, 6-0, with the exception of No. 2 doubles team of Heater Young and Carissa O’Donnell who claimed the win 6-1, 6-2.

Falcon falls to 0-4 and 0-1 in league play. Lewis-Palmer is 2-2 and 1-1.

Fountain-Fort Carson 7, Mitchell 0

At Mitchell: Fountain-Fort Carson swept Mitchell for a nonconference win. In No. 2 singles, Fountain-Fort Carson’s Madison Sabala defeated Marlyn Torres 6-0, 6-2, and Rachel Johnson claimed a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Mitchell’s Briauna Francesconi.

The Trojans are undefeated at 2-0. Mitchell is still searching for its first win.
