At Manitou Springs: Last season, two programs stood in front of The Vanguard School for top billing in the 3A Tri-Peaks League.
It’s time, perhaps, for a changing of the guard.
Nearly three weeks removed from the Coursers’ first-ever win over Colorado Springs Christian, which has won at least a share of the league title the past seven seasons, they did it again Tuesday, knocking off 2015-16 league co-champ Manitou Springs for the first time in program history.
Vanguard (15-2, 9-0) bounced back from a 53-51 loss at undefeated Crowley County on Feb. 2, taking control against Manitou (9-7, 4-4) with a 19-7 second-quarter run that gave the Coursers a 33-25 lead at halftime.
Seth Fuqua led all scorers with 27 points, Dominique Clifford added 12, and Vanguard also rode the defense of Tyler Wheeler-Temple, who helped limit Manitou star Cole Sienknecht to only two of his team-high 20 points in the first half.
Rampart 67, Liberty 65
At Liberty: Dawson Carper led three scorers in double figures with 20 points, and Rampart rallied from a 10-point deficit in the second half as the Rams edged their district rival for their sixth straight victory.
Xavier Johnson had 15 points and Josh Kavalec added 14 for the Rams (16-5, 8-2 5A Colorado Springs Metro League).
Denver East 70, Doherty 65
At Doherty: Alijah Bates had a monster night with 15 points and 15 rebounds for Doherty, but the Spartans allowed a 13-0 run and fell to perennial power Denver East to end a five-game winning streak.
Three others hit double figures for the Spartans (16-4) as Joe Golden had 15 points, DeMarious Carey added 13 and Joshua Walker chipped in with 11.
ECA 64, Fountain Valley 40
At ECA: Justin Holt poured in 20 points, and ECA (12-5, 5-2 2A Black Forest) outscored Fountain Valley (5-10, 1-7) by a 35-14 margin between the second and third quarters to break it open.
Liberty 43, Rampart 42 (OT)
At Liberty: Jayda Lyon scored the game-winning shot late in overtime as Liberty completed a league sweep of its district rival for the first time in more than a decade.
Liberty (15-6, 7-3 5A Colorado Springs Metro League) scored late in regulation to tie the game at 35 and send it into overtime.
Doherty 58, Denver East 56
At Denver East: Unique Gainey hit the game-winning shot late in the fourth quarter and led the way with 14 points and 13 rebounds as Doherty ran its winning streak to 14.
Brionna McBride and Mykiaa Minniss added 13 points apiece for the Spartans (17-3).
Discovery Canyon 53,
Palmer Ridge 37
At Discovery Canyon: Ashten Prechtel scored a game-high 25 points, Julia Carter added 15, and Discovery Canyon led from the start in a dominating performance.
The Thunder (12-7, 6-5 5A/4A Pikes Peak) gradually added to a double-digit lead in the first quarter.
Fountain-Fort Carson 62, Coronado 29
At Fountain-Fort Carson: Samiyah Worrell and Danae Christensen led a balanced scoring attack with 11 points each, and Fountain-Fort Carson limited Coronado to 17.8 percent shooting from the field (10 for 56) in a rout of the Cougars.
Cheyenne Mountain 53, Lewis-Palmer 46
At Cheyenne Mountain: Selena Vargas had 20 points to lead three scorers in double figures as Cheyenne Mountain took control with a decisive third-quarter run.
