Tuesday's prep roundup: Doherty beats Rampart in girls' basketball

Doherty 56, Rampart 48

At Rampart: The Pikes Peak region 5A No. 1 Spartans were outscored 17-6 in the first quarter and were down 32-24 at the half, but Doherty (12-3, 5-0 5A CSML) fought back to earn a tough win over the No. 3 Rams (4-9, 1-3).

Brionna McBride scored 17, Mykiaa Minniss had 12 and Unique Gainey finished with 11 for the Spartans. Bailee Hart and Madi Wriedt each scored 17 points for Rampart.

Pine Creek 52, Liberty 46

At Liberty: The Lancers took a 12-5 lead after the first quarter, but Pine Creek outscored Liberty 27-9 in the second and third quarters.

Liberty did its best to make a comeback with 25 points in the fourth, but it was too little too late for the Pikes Peak region 5A No. 2 Lancers (9-4, 3-2 5A CSML) who saw their three-game win streak end.

Bri Bailey scored 22 points for the Eagles (5-7, 2-2) including four 3-pointers, while teammates Elaena Murdock and Brooklyn Thomas each scored 10. The win ended a four-game skid for Pine Creek.

Manitou Springs 54,

Trinidad 30

At Manitou: The Mustangs (6-5, 3-1 3A Tri-Peaks) bounced back from Friday's loss to rival St. Mary's with a win over Trinidad (2-9, 0-4) on Tuesday. The Mustangs sit in fourth place in the 3A Tri-Peaks league behind Colorado Springs Christian School, St. Mary's and Lamar.

Widefield 60, Mitchell 10

At Widefield: Mitchell's struggles continued after falling to Widefield in another blowout loss. Last week the Marauders fell to Sierra 101-7 and to the Classical Academy 65-14.

Charisse Fairley and Aaliyah Ricketts both finished in the double digits with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Sierra Mills scored eight of Mitchell's 10 points and Amadee Zwick scored the other basket.

The Gladiators (9-3, 4-1 4A CSML) outscored Mitchell (0-11, 0-4) 20-2 in the first quarter as Widefield cruised to their second consecutive win.

Air Academy 44, Coronado 22

At Coronado: The Kadets (12-1) won their ninth consecutive game with the win over the Cougars (4-10) in the nonleague matchup.  

Kylee Blacksten led Air Academy with 10 points, Heaven Hall added eight and Annie Louthan was the third-leading scorer for the Pikes Peak region 4A No. 1 Kadets with seven. 

Colorado Springs School 44, Kiowa 36

At CSS: The Pikes Peak region 3A and below No. 3 Kodiaks won their second consecutive game after a one-point loss to Calhan in the Kodiaks' only loss of the season thus far. Senior Natalie Richardi led all scorers with 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Kodiaks. Ali Graham scored eight and Samantha Warhoe finished with seven. Esther Janes scored 14 for Kiowa.

CSS improved to 9-1 with the win. Kiowa fell to 1-7.

Canon City 39, Elizabeth 32

At Canon City: The Tigers handed the Cardinals their seventh straight loss, as Canon City improved to 3-2 in the 4A CSML and 5-7 overall. Elizabeth fell to 1-12 and 0-6 in league play.


Liberty 49, Pine Creek 34

At Liberty: Sean Bohuslavsky led Liberty with 18 points as Pikes Peak region No. 3 Liberty (10-4, 3-2 5A CSML) got back in the win column after a 10-point loss to the region's No. 2 5A team Rampart. Pine Creek fell to 5-6 and 1-3 in league play.

Liberty's schedule doesn't get any easier. Next week the Lancers will face 5A CSML leader Doherty and 4A No. 1 Lewis-Palmer.

Manitou 55, Trinidad 39

At Manitou: The Mustangs held Trinidad to just one point in the first quarter while scoring 13 of their own. Trinidad went on a run to go into the half down by just five, but the Mustangs squashed any attempt at a comeback in the second half while outscoring Trinidad 29-18.

Eli Stephens scored 23 points to lead the Mustangs (7-4, 3-1) over the Miners (2-7, 0-4) for a 3A Tri-Peaks league win.

Widefield 81, Mitchell 38

At Mitchell: The Gladiators led the Marauders 23-20 after the first quarter, but then Widefield (8-4, 3-2 4A CSML) took complete control and outscored Mitchell (1-11, 0-5) 58-18 the rest of the way. The game marked Widefield’s second consecutive win while scoring more than 80 points.

Tre Pierre led the Gladiators with 16 points, TJ Davis had 14, Randall Days scored 11 and Doug Barnes finished with 10.

Mesa Ridge 67, Woodland Park 58

At Woodland Park: The 4A Colorado Springs Metro League leader Grizzlies remained perfect in league play after the win over the Panthers (7-6, 2-4) and Mesa Ridge (8-4, 5-0) earned its seventh consecutive win.

Josh Bodin led the Panthers with 28 points and Skye Ciccarelli added 19. Stats for Mesa Ridge were not available at time of print.

Colorado Springs School 43, Kiowa 22

At CSS: Luke Taylor led the Kodiaks with 13 points as CSS (5-4) made it two in a row with the win over Kiowa (0-9).


Liberty 101, Pine Creek 85

At Pine Creek: Liberty’s Gabi Roehr did her part to help the Lancers earn the win in a dual against the Eagles. Roehr recorded the top times in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100 butterfly, and she also anchored the winning 200 freestyle relay team that included Sarah Gaines, Grace McCrary and Jenna Kondracki.

Both Liberty (5-1, 4-1 5A CSML) and Pine Creek (6-2, 4-2) won six of the 12 events, but Liberty’s depth helped the Lancers to secure the win.

Pine Creek’s Kennedy Terry did all she could to help the Eagles with wins in two individual events – the 50 and 100 freestyles—and she was also a part of both the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

Doherty 101, Palmer 83

At Doherty: Auna Smith, Ella Adler and Samantha Shute all won individual events for the Spartans to help Doherty to the dual meet win over Palmer. Smith won the diving competition and Shute touched first in the 200 freestyle. Adler notched wins in both the 200 individual medley and the 100 freestyle.

Doherty (2-5, 2-4 5A CSML) won seven of the events while Palmer (0-6, 0-5) took home wins in five.

Rampart 132, Coronado 53

At Coronado: Rampart stayed perfect in duals this season with a win over Coronado in the Metro League. The Rams took first place in each of the 12 events.

Catriona Clarke finished with a state-qualifying time of 1 minute, 1.66 seconds in the 100 butterfly and she was also a part of the 200 medley relay team with a state-qualifying time of 1:50.09 and the 400 and 200 freestyle relay teams that also won with state-qualifying times.


Rampart 6, Pine Creek 3

At Honnen Ice Arena: Rampart scored in each period, including five goals in the first two. Pine Creek scored three in the second period but couldn’t muster a comeback as the Rams (10-5) added one more in the third to best the rival Eagles (6-5-1).

 Mullen 9, Woodland Park 0

At Honnen Ice Arena: One game after the Panthers notched their first win as a program, Woodland Park (1-11, 1-10 Highlands league) was blanked by conference foe Mullen (2-8, 1-6). The Mustangs scored three points in the first period, four in the second and two in the third.  

Chaparral 11, Air Academy 0

At Sertich Ice Arena: Chaparral (8-3, 7-3 Pinnacle league) scored seven goals in the first period to put this one away quickly. The loss was the fourth consecutive for the Kadets (2-8, 2-7).



Cheyenne Mountain 76, Palmer Ridge 0

At Palmer Ridge: The 4A No. 9 Indians earned a big win over Palmer Ridge after Cheyenne Mountain wrestlers won by pin in eight of the matches. Deonte Bridges had the quickest finish of the day in 31 seconds.

Three matches were won by forfeit.
