Tuesday's prep roundup: Mesa Ridge, Sierra softball put up big numbers in league wins

St. Mary’s Academy 3, Liberty 1

At Liberty: Kylan McCulloch was Liberty’s lone goal scorer against St. Mary’s Academy, but her efforts came up short in a 3-1 loss. Christina Jensen had eight saves for the Lancers (2-8-2).

Palmer Ridge 3, Colorado Academy 1

At Palmer Ridge: The Bears extended their winning streak to four with a win over Colorado Academy thanks to a hat trick by Jordyn Isner. Liz Phillips had two assists and Katie Doiron had one helper for the Bears (8-1-1), while Reese Wagers had four saves. 


James Irwin 5, Rye 1

At Rye: The Jaguars scored three goals in the first half of a 3A Tri-Peaks 1 game, and tacked on two more goals in the second half, just for good measure. James Irwin leads the league at 3-0 in Tri-Peaks play, and 8-1 overall.

Widefield 2, Mitchell 2 (2OT)

At Mitchell: Eighty minutes was not enough to decide a 4A Colorado Springs Metro League game as Mitchell and Widefield were forced to settle for a draw.

Salif Doumbia and Kody Scholl each found the back of the net for Widefield (5-5-1, 2-1-1), but Mitchell (4-5-1, 1-1-1) responded with equalizers after both goals.

Golden 4, Mesa Ridge 2

At Mesa Ridge: The Grizzlies could not eliminate a two-goal deficit in a nonconference game Tuesday as Mesa Ridge (8-2) fell to Golden for its second loss of the season, snapping a five-game winning streak.

Canon City 4, Sierra 1

At Sierra: Garrett Walsworth had a pair of goals for the Tigers as Canon City claimed a 4A Metro League win over Sierra.

In addition to Walsworth’s efforts, Logan and Demitrius Slater each tallied a goal for Canon City (5-5, 2-1). Sierra falls to 3-7 overall and 1-3 in Metro League play.

Colorado Springs Christian 9, Ellicott 0

At Ellicott: CSCS remained perfect in 3A Tri-Peaks 2 play thanks to a dominant performance over Ellicott. The Lions (8-2, 4-0) scored five goals in the first half and added four more in the second. The Thunderhawks are still searching for their first win of the season.

St. Mary’s 9, Dolores Huerta 1

At Dolores Huerta: At halftime it looked like St. Mary’s and Dolores Huerta would battle to the end, but the Pirates scored seven goals in the second half, all the while shutting out the Scorpions in the remaining time. St. Mary’s is rebounding from a two-game losing skid, and sits in third in 3A Tri-Peaks 1 at 2-1 in league play and 7-3 overall.

Elizabeth 3, Harrison 2 (2OT)

At Elizabeth: Colby Steinke played hero in double overtime of a 4A Metro League game against Harrison (4-5-1, 2-2). Jose Luis Zuniga Palacios and Sam Jamieson also had goals for the Cardinals (2-9, 1-3).

Rampart 3, Fountain-Fort Carson 1

At Fountain-Fort Carson: The Rams tacked on two goals in the second half to stay perfect in the 5A Metro League, as the Trojans fall to 0-3 in league play. Jack Mcreynolds, David Peters and Dillon O’Neal each had goals for the Rams (8-4, 3-0). Fountain-Fort Carson falls to 3-8-1 on the season.

Evangelical Christian Academy 2, Vanguard 1

At Evangelical Christian Academy: Joseph Wilcox netted a goal in the second half for Evangelical Christian Academy to lift the Eagles over Vanguard in a 3A Tri-Peaks 2 game. Ben DeRuiter scored for the Eagles (2-7, 2-1) in the first half. Vanguard (2-8) is still searching for its first win in Tri-Peaks play.

TCA 10, Woodland Park 0

At Woodland Park: The Classical Academy (8-1, 3-0) scored seven goals in the first half of a 4A Metro League game, and scored three more in the second half, all the while keeping Woodland Park off the board. The Panthers are winless in league play at 0-4.

Liberty 2, Doherty 1

At Doherty: Liberty defended a Doherty comeback in the second half by scoring in the final minutes to claim a 5A Metro League victory. Kylan Crafts-Thimmig and Benjamin Beermann also scored for the Lancers (7-3-1, 2-0). Doherty falls to 3-7-1 and 1-1 in league play.

Air Academy 11, Falcon 1

At Air Academy: The Kadets netted seven goals in the second half of a 5A/4A Pikes Peak League game on the way to a decisive victory, and the 11th straight win for Air Academy (11-0, 3-0). Kristian Hooker, Luke Louthan and Thaddaeus Dewing each had two goals for the Kadets. Falcon (2-7-1) is still searching for its first league win.

Sand Creek 3, Cheyenne Mountain 3, 2OT

At Cheyenne Mountain: Sand Creek’s perfect streak came to an end Tuesday as the Scorpions settled for a draw against Cheyenne Mountain after two scoreless overtime periods of 5A/4A Pikes Peak play. The Indians (5-3-2, 1-0-1) scored two goals in the second half to force overtime and became the first team to force undefeated Sand Creek (10-0-1, 2-0-1) into extra time this season. Dylan Baeck had two goals for Cheyenne Mountain while Rodrigo Periera had a goal and an assist.

Vista Ridge 4, Palmer Ridge 2

At Vista Ridge: Vista Ridge stormed from behind in a 5A/4A Pikes Peak League game, eliminating a two-goal deficit by netting four in the second half to claim the win. Palmer Ridge (2-7-1) falls to 0-3 in Pikes Peak play while Vista Ridge is 4-7 overall and 2-1 in the league.  

Coronado 4, Palmer 0

At Coronado: The Cougars blanked Palmer in a 5A Metro League game thanks to four second-half goals. Coronado sits a .500 at 5-5 and 1-1 in league play. Palmer falls 2-0 and 0-1.


Mesa Ridge 34, Woodland Park 9

At Woodland Park: Mesa Ridge scored 15 runs in the top of the fifth on the way to a dominant 4A Metro League win over Woodland Park. The Grizzlies (11-6, 5-1) had 22 hits, while the Panthers (3-15, 3-4) had 15.

Canon City 18, The Classical Academy 3, 4 innings

At The Classical Academy: Sayari Sanders threw a no-hitter for Canon City on the way to a 4A Metro League win, but walked nine as The Classical Academy (4-14, 2-5) scored three unearned runs to spoil her shutout. Briana Atencio had five RBIs for the Tigers (5-12, 3-3), while Sanders brought in four runs off three hits.

Elizabeth 6, Widefield 0

At Widefield: Elizabeth scored five runs in the top of the fifth, and brought in one more run in the sixth for good measure as the Cardinals shut out Widefield in a 4A Metro League game. Six Cardinal players batted in runs, while Madi Biller had a solid outing in the circle for Elizabeth (14-4, 7-0) with 10 strikeouts. Dana Atencio had two hits for Widefield (11-7, 6-1).

Sierra 30, Mitchell 25


TCA 3, Sierra 1

At Sierra: After falling behind 2-0, Sierra stormed back to take the third set of a 4A Metro League game, but ultimately fell 3-1. The Classical Academy (7-6, 1-0) was led by Annie Zielinski and Olivia Jacobsen with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Sierra falls to 5-8 on the season and 0-2 overall.

Canon City 3, Mitchell 0

At Mitchell: The Tigers claimed three decisive set wins in a 4A Metro League win. Makenna Sawyer and Bailey Boccaccio had five kills each for Canon City (7-6, 2-0), while Mitchell (3-10, 0-2) was led by Tereza Solocova and Nova Poe-Steppler with four kills each.

James Irwin 3, Atlas Prep 0

At James Irwin: The Jaguars claimed three decisive wins over Atlas Prep 25-11, 25-5, 25-14 for their second 3A Tri-Peaks volleyball win of the season. James Irwin is 5-9 overall and 2-6 in league play, while Atlas falls to 1-9 and 0-7 in Tri-Peaks.

Manitou Springs 3, Vanguard 1

At Manitou Springs: Vanguard claimed a close first-set victory 25-23, but fell in the remaining three sets to Manitou Springs in a 3A Tri-Peaks game. The Coursers fall to 1-5 in league play and 5-11 overall, while Manitou Springs is 7-6 overall and 5-1 in Tri-Peaks play.

Coronado 3, Liberty 0

At Liberty: The Cougars swept Liberty in a  5A Metro League game for their first league win of the season. Coronado is 11-2, while Liberty falls to 7-7 and 0-1 in the Metro.

Widefield 3, Mesa Ridge 2

At Widefield: Mesa Ridge and Widefield battled to the end of a five-set match of a 4A Metro League matchup. Widefield claimed the first two sets 25-23, then Mesa Ridge (4-9, 1-1) came back to win the following two 25-21. The Gladiators (9-4, 1-1) claimed the third set by a score of 15-12 to lock in the win.

Palmer Ridge 3, Sand Creek 0

At Sand Creek: The Bears claimed three decisive set wins to sweep Sand Creek in a 4A/5A Pikes Peak match. Palmer Ridge is 12-2 overall and 1-1 in league play, while Sand Creek falls to last place in Pikes Peak a 4-14 overall and 0-3 in league play.  

Lewis-Palmer 3, Air Academy 0

At Air Academy: The Rangers continue their dominant season with another sweep, this time in a 4A/5A Pikes Peak matchup against Air Academy. Lewis-Palmer remains undefeated on the season at 14-0 and 2-0 in league play, while Aic Academy is 6-7 and 1-1 in Pikes Peak play.
