The No. 1 Palmer Ridge field hockey team has a chance to claim the state championship after claiming a 3-1 win over No. 4 Regis Jesuit on Tuesday.
Palmer Ridge will play No. 3 Kent Denver on Thursday in a rematch of last year's state championship. The Sun Devils won 1-0 over Colorado Academy in overtime on Tuesday.
The Bears got on the board midway through the first half thanks to a goal by Liz Phillips, then later found the back of the cage off a corner to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.
Abby Hermann scored off a corner seconds into the second half as the Bears began to overwhelm the Raiders with their corner attack.
“The girls came out exactly how we needed to, we knew Regis was a very physical and fit team and they were going to run the whole game, so we needed to keep our pace and we were able to do that," Palmer Ridge coach Paul Lewis said. "I think we played better in the second half than we did in the first.”
Thursday will be Palmer Ridge's fourth state title game appearance since 2012, but the Bears have yet to hoist the state championship trophy. Last year Palmer Ridge was ranked second and fell 2-0 to No. 1 Kent Denver in the championship.
Lewis said he would love to get redemption against Kent Denver.
"It's exciting to be back, and we definitely want this win," he said. "We haven't gotten it yet and it would be a nice justification for these players and this program to get that final win, but either team we play is going to be a tough match."
Reagan Cadieux had the Raiders' lone goal.
