At Sand Creek: The reigning Class 4A state champions had a rocky start to the 2018 campaign with a 4A Region 6 loss to Sand Creek.

The Scorpions swept the singles matches, with the most dominant win coming from freshman Janea Kite, who earned a 8-0 win at No. 3 singles.

Cheyenne Mountain’s No. 2 and No. 4 doubles teams earned the only Indians wins of the day, each by a score of 8-6.

Kaitlyn Fark (No. 1 singles) and Isabella Aragon (No. 2 singles) claimed victories, while No. 1 doubles Katie Anspach and Morgan Bird, and No. 3 doubles team of Hailey Nesenson and Alyssa Dowdy earned close wins, 8-5 and 9-8, respectively.

Doherty promotes softball coach: Doherty baseball coach Mike Burkey will be busy this coming fall as well. Burkey, who is entering his fourth year as coach of the Spartan baseball program, was named coach of the softball team, as announced by Doherty Athletics on Tuesday.

Burkey previously served as coach of the softball team in 2017 on an interim basis. The announcement from the athletic department said the school is proud to drop the "interim tag" from his name and welcome him as the new softball coach.

Last year the Doherty softball team finished 10-9 and 7-5 in the 5A Colorado Springs Metro league. The Spartan baseball team starts its season on Thursday at the Las Cruces Invitational.
