Tuesday's prep roundup: St. Mary's goalkeeper Calhoun shines in win over James Irwin

At James Irwin: St. Mary's keeper Gabe Calhoun can stop shots and create a few of his own.

In a matter of moments, stellar defense becomes instant offense.

Calhoun scored his first goal of the season and stopped 13 shots as St. Mary's (9-4, 4-1 3A Tri-Peaks 1) beat James Irwin (8-3, 3-2) for its third win in four games.

In the 15th minute, Calhoun launched a free kick just inside midfield into the back of the net for the Pirates' opening goal. The junior also leads the team with eight assists this season.

"He's most likely our best player and our best athlete on the field," St. Mary's coach Gregg Braha said. "He's phenomenal."

Connor Timmins added two goals and Wyatt Barton had a goal and two assists for St. Mary's.

Luis Alvarado-Salazar and Allan Garcia scored for James Irwin, which outshot the Pirates 15-6 in its first home loss of the season.

Cheyenne Mountain 9, Falcon 0

At Cheyenne Mountain: Sam Kilimann had three goals and an assist as Cheyenne Mountain (7-3-2, 3-0-1 5A/4A Pikes Peak Athletic Conference) beat Falcon (3-9-1, 0-5) to push its unbeaten streak to seven games.

Bryce Tanner and Rodrigo Periera each added two goals for the Indians, who sit behind Air Academy (13-0, 5-0) for the league lead. Caleb Macclean recorded the shutout.

Falcon has lost five of its past six games.

TCA 10, Widefield 0

At TCA: Jake Slater had three goals and an assist as the Titans (11-1, 5-0 4A CSML) beat Widefield (6-6-1, 3-2-1) with 42 shots.

Daniel Borchert had two goals and an assist and Garrett Troupe scored twice for the Titans. Aaron Peck added a goal and two assists.

The Gladiators did not record a shot on goal.

Mesa Ridge 4, Harrison 2

At Mesa Ridge: Tristan Widic scored four goals as Mesa Ridge (9-3, 4-1 4A CSML) beat Harrison (4-7-1, 2-4).

Widic scored three in the first half and added another after the break on seven shots. The senior now has 20 goals on the year and four games with at least two goals.

Kyle Costra added seven saves in the win.

Doherty 5, Coronado 1

At Garry Berry Stadium: Cameron Wheeler had two goals and Jared Sowa had a goal and an assist as Doherty (4-7-1, 2-1 5A CSML) beat Coronado (5-7, 1-3).

Freshman Eric Thornock added six saves in the win.

Fountain-Fort Carson 2, Palmer 1

At F-FC: Ja'Warren Smith and Tristen Walter scored as Fountain-Fort Carson (4-8-1, 1-3 5A CSML) beat Palmer (2-11, 0-4) for just its second win in its past seven games.

Samuel Starkey added an assist for the Trojans.

The Terrors have lost six straight.



Lewis-Palmer 3, Falcon 0

At Lewis-Palmer: Iowa-transfer Trinity Jackson had nine kills and eight digs as Lewis-Palmer (16-0, 4-0 5A/4A Pikes Peak Athletic Conference) beat Falcon (5-11, 0-4) 25-7, 25-11, 25-8.

The Rangers have won 45 straight since losing to Cheyenne Mountain in the 2015 state title game.

Taylor Buckley also had nine kills for L-P, and McKenna Sciacca had four kills, five aces and 20 assists. Gianna Bartalo had three aces and 12 digs.

The Falcons lost their fourth straight match.

Palmer Ridge 3, Air Academy 1

At Palmer Ridge: Freshman Mac Russ had another 16 kills to give her a 4A freshman-best 161 on the season as Palmer Ridge (14-2, 3-1 4A/5A PPAC) beat Air Academy (7-8, 2-2) for its third straight win.

Summer Reflogal had 13 kills and freshman Riley Simpson added another 11 in the win.

The Bears have continued to shine this season with a strong cast of freshmen leading the way. Their two losses on the year have come to 5A Coronado and L-P.

Air Academy is 3-4 in its last seven matches.

TCA 3, Mitchell 0

At Mitchell: Freshman Hope Storm had nine aces and Katelyn Strickland added another six as part of TCA's 24 one-timers on the night, leading the Titans past Mitchell 25-5, 25-12, 25-11.

Autumn Boyles added eight kills as TCA won its third straight match.

Emily Rivera had 17 digs and Briauna Francesconi added another 15 for the Marauders. Mitchell has lost eight in a row.

CSCS 3, Salida 0

At CSCS: Megan Engesser had nine kills and 10 digs as CSCS (9-5, 8-1 3A Tri-Peaks) beat Salida (3-12, 1-6) for its fourth win in five matches.

Christa Vogt added six kills and an ace.

The Lions are back of Lamar (17-1, 8-0) and Buena Vista (11-2, 8-0) in the league standings.

Elizabeth 3, Harrison 0

At Harrison: Vanessa Trujillo had four kills, five digs and seven assists as Harrison fell to Elizabeth 25-22, 25-22, 25-17.

The Panthers have lost seven straight after starting the year 6-5.

Kaylene Richardson also had four kills in the loss.
