Wednesday's prep roundup: Discovery Canyon tops Cheyenne Mountain in softball

SOFTBALL    

Discovery Canyon 7, Cheyenne Mountain 0

At Cheyenne Mountain: Freshman Kayden Rodgers hammered in a home run, Sami Edwards had a two-RBI double and Corah Price pitched a complete game with 12 strikeouts to propel the Thunder to the shutout win in 5A/4A Pikes Peak Athletic Conference action. After jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first, Discovery Canyon (10-3-1, 4-1) pulled away with three runs in the fourth and two more in the following inning.

Cheyenne Mountain (11-3, 3-2) has lost two of its last three games.

Air Academy 22, Lewis-Palmer 2, 3 innings

At Air Academy: The Kadets (9-5, 5-0) stayed atop the PPAC after jumping out to a 9-2 lead in the first inning against the Rangers (6-11, 1-4).

Air Academy’s Lindsay Holloway led the way by going 3 for 3 with four RBIs. Teammate Lilly Kelkenberg finished with a three-RBI single for the Kadets, who added eight runs in the second and five more in the third.

Vista Ridge 8, Falcon 0

At Vista Ridge: The Wolves scored six runs in the first two innings and got a standout performance by Chloe Ewing, who struck out eight batters and allowed four hits in a complete game. Katey Kelly went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, Kaitlyn Lord knocked in two runs and both Alexis Silvey and Ewing went 2 for 4 to help lift Vista Ridge, which improved to 11-5 overall and 4-1 in the PPAC.

In the loss, Falcons pitcher Taylor Striebel struck out seven batters. Falcon dropped to 4-9 and 1-4.

Palmer Ridge 12, Sand Creek 2, 6 innings

At Palmer Ridge: Maya Liester went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, Kylie Walker was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and the Bears put up five runs apiece in the first and sixth innings and exploded for 18 total hits to top the Scorpions (2-12, 0-5) in the PPAC game. Makenna Hageman and Sara Lynch each had a triple, and Carson Saabye went 3 for 4 with two runs scored.

Lynch also pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts for the Bears, who improved to 8-4 overall and 2-3 in the PPAC.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Pueblo Centennial 6, Palmer 0

At Palmer: After being down 1-0 at halftime, the Bulldogs allowed five second-half goals in the nonconference game to suffer their second straight loss.

Palmer dropped to 2-7, while Pueblo Centennial improved to 6-2-1.

BOYS’ GOLF    

Cougar Classic

At Kissing Camels Golf Course: Pine Creek’s Andrew Doyle shot a 2-over-par 71 to win the individual title and lead the Eagles a second-place team finish. Liberty’s Brandon Bervig finished second at 3-over-par to lift the Lancers to the team title.

Liberty’s Lucas Howell (82) finished third, and Liberty’s Alex Ruggles (84) and Doherty’s Avery Henderson (84) tied for fourth.

Discovery Canyon and Doherty rounded out the top five.

FIELD HOCKEY

Liberty 3, Arapahoe 1

At D20 Stadium: Tina Bomberg scored all of her three goals in the first half to lead the 2-6 Lancers to their second win of the season. Two of the goals were assisted by Madeleine Bourgois and Penny Schwab.

Arapahoe, which scored a goal in the first half, dropped to 1-6.

Palmer Ridge 6, Mountain Vista 2

At Mountain Vista: The Bears (5-1-1) jumped out to a 3-1 lead at halftime before adding three more goals in the second half against Mountain Vista, which fell to 3-3-2.

VOLLEYBALL    

Calhan 3, Harrison 2

At Harrison: After falling behind in the first set, the Bulldogs bounced back to win 20-25, 25-19, 13-25, 25-20, 25-4 in the nonconference match. Calhan improved to 5-4, and Harrison dropped to 6-7.
