Discovery Canyon High School and Sierra each went undefeated to clinch a berth at the state tournament at Aurora State Park in Aurora on Oct. 20.

The Thunder, who entered the Class 4A regional as the fifth seed, hosted postseason games for the first time since 2017.

They never trailed in the tournament and beat Green Mountain 12-2 on Friday and defeated Frederick 13-6 in the second round.

“This is a big deal,” said Thunder coach Tanya Ramsay. “I attribute a lot of this to our senior class – Avery Hixson, Kameran Randolph, Kassidy Randolph – they’ve really bought in to the program. One thing we always say is ‘Leave the program better than you found it.’ This senior class has done that very well.”

In 3A, Sierra went 2-0 as the 13th seed and never trailed in their bracket. The Stallions routed Weld Central 13-3 in the opening round and exploded for six runs in the seventh inning to defeat host Delta 10-4.

The Stallions’ regional victory marks the first time in more than two decades that Sierra will compete for a softball state championship.

The Stallions last played in the state tournament in 2002 when they lost 3-1 to Conifer in the Class 4A quarterfinals.

Pine Creek defeated Palmer Ridge 8-6 in the opening round and again in the second round consolation bracket 16-14 to clinch a berth at the state tournament.

The Eagles clinched a state berth for the first time since 2014 when Pine Creek played 5A.

The Eagles finished that season 13-9-1, earned the 13 seed but lost 11-1 in the first round to Castle View.

Teams will wait for seeding and state action begins at 10 a.m. on Friday.
