Compelling contests

BOYS' VOLLEYBALL

Douglas County 3, Discovery Canyon 1

Discovery Canyon, seeded No. 1 in the boys volleyball playoffs, fell victim to an upset at the hands of Douglas County in regionals Saturday.

The Thunder won the first set before dropping the next three. DCC, which founded its program in 2022, had lost just twice in program history before Saturday.

Discovery Canyon’s (21-2) only other loss this season came to Fountain-Fort Carson, which advanced to the state tournament.

BASEBALL

Coronado 1, Mesa Ridge 0

Coronado won a low-scoring battle behind a gem from Trey Gregory-Alford.

The senior threw a one-hitter and struck out 12 Grizzlies. Gregory-Alford also had the Cougars’ only RBI on one of just four Coronado hits.

Coronado (12-9) has won seven of its last eight contests.

BOYS' LACROSSE

Cheyenne Mountain 8, Air Academy 7

The area’s two best boys lacrosse teams battled last week, with Cheyenne Mountain beating Air Academy 8-7.

Ethan Longwill, a junior, scored five of the Red-Tailed Hawks’ eight goals, giving them the offensive push they needed to win.

Cheyenne Mountain (12-2) lost later in the week to Erie but enters the 4A playoffs as the No. 2 seed. Air Academy (10-4) is the No. 6 seed.

GIRLS' SOCCER

Colorado Springs Christian 1, Doherty 0

Colorado Springs Christian, which plays at the 2A level, upset a 5A squad in Doherty on Saturday.

Sophomore goalkeeper Shamaya Alexander held the Spartans scoreless, while junior Ella Baker scored the Lions’ only goal.

CSCS won the 2A state title in 2023 and enters the 2024 playoffs as the No. 6 seed. Doherty (8-5-1) lost four of its last five matches to end the season.

Rampart 2, Fountain-Fort Carson 1

Rampart narrowly beat Fountain-Fort Carson 2-1 to win its sixth match in a row.

Junior Abby Smith and sophomore Lauryn Clark each scored to give the Rams their one-goal win. The Rams (13-1) enter the 5A playoffs as the No. 7 seed.

Rampart lost just once in the regular season to Pine Creek.

Trends to track

Fountain-Fort Carson only survivor of regional volleyball

In a weekend where Discovery Canyon, Sand Creek and Cheyenne Mountain all bowed out of the 5A boys volleyball regionals, Fountain-Fort Carson stayed alive.

The Trojans took down Valor Christian and Vista PEAK Prep to clinch their spot in the state tournament. F-FC (23-2) has won 19 matches in a row, including a regular-season win over No. 1 Discovery Canyon.

Fountain-Fort Carson, seeded No. 6, opens the state tournament against No. 3 Eaglecrest on Thursday.

State swim finals to be held Thursday through Saturday

Swimmers across Colorado will compete at state in Thornton at this weekend’s 5A and 4A championships.

Cheyenne Mountain was the Pikes Peak region’s only team champion last year, as the Red-Tailed Hawks won their second title in a row.

Red-Tailed Hawks begin quest for lacrosse four-peat

Cheyenne Mountain has been on top of the 4A boys lacrosse world for the last three years, and the Red-Tailed Hawks will look to make it four.

A year ago, Cheyenne Mountain scored in double overtime of the championship game against Erie to give the Red-Tailed Hawks their third title in a row. Cheyenne Mountain (12-2) enters the 2024 playoffs as the No. 2 seed.

Erie got the better of the Red-Tailed Hawks last week, though, as the Tigers beat them 16-5 in both teams’ final regular-season game.
